Navigation is a field of study that focuses on the process of monitoring and controlling the movement of a craft or vehicle from one place to another.

The lower reaches of the river are navigable to river craft and are known as the Kennet Navigation, which, together with the Avon Navigation, the Kennet and Avon Canal and the Thames, links the cities of Bristol and London.

The river is navigable by barges and large river craft to Catoosa, Oklahoma because of a series of locks and dams that have been constructed since the early twentieth century, the McClellan-Kerr Arkansas River Navigation System.

The last commercial craft on the Navigation was the vessel Ousefleet, delivering coal to Frodingham Wharf during the period to December 1951.

The Sheffield and South Yorkshire Navigation canal, once a major transport route between Sheffield and Goole, underwent substantial modernisation in the mid 1980s and is capable of accommodating large vessels as far as Rotherham, and pleasure craft through to Sheffield.

The Lee Navigation paid the proprietors £ 105 in 1774, for improvements made to the junction between the two rivers.

The commercial policy that led to the Navigation Act in October 1651, made Oliver Cromwell want to attract the rich Jews of Amsterdam to London so that they might transfer their important trade interests with the Spanish Main from Holland to England.

At the instigation of agent Edward Randolph, Charles made increasingly specific demands concerning freedom of religion and adherence to colonial trade regulations known as the Navigation Acts, and prepared to issue a quo warranto writ to demand the return of the colonial charter.
