After the Soviet Union launched Sputnik 2, on November 3, 1957, then Secretary of Defense Neil H. McElroy directed the Army to use the Juno I and launch a satellite.

The discipline of brand management was started at Procter & Gamble as a result of a famous memo by Neil H. McElroy.

United States Secretary of the Navy Thomas S. Gates embraced the last recommendation in a meeting with United States Secretary of Defense Neil Hosler McElroy on 11 November 1958.

Neil Hosler McElroy ( October 30, 1904-November 30, 1972 ) was United States Secretary of Defense from 1957 to 1959 under President Eisenhower.

This event, which raised important questions about the U. S. defense program, served as a backdrop to the swearing in, on October 9, 1957, of Neil H. McElroy as Secretary of Defense.

The shift to brand management began on May 13, 1931, with an internal memorandum from Neil McElroy ( 1904 – 1972 ), an athletic young man who had come to P & G in 1925 right after his graduation from Harvard College.

This group included Neil McElroy himself, who headed the company after Deupree retired in 1948, and who in 1957 became Secretary of Defense under President Eisenhower.

Gates devoted more time than his predecessors Charles E. Wilson and Neil H. McElroy to the development of basic defense policy, a sphere in which the president remained dominant.

At the same time as the early nuclear arms control work, the Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff, General Nathan F.
