In his 2005 book The Areas of My Expertise, John Hodgman refers to Nemo as " the Sikh " and " the Science-Pirate ", as Nemo was referred to in the League comics.

In the motto " No-one harasses me with impunity " ( Latin: " Nemo me impune lacessit "), " me " was therefore originally the thistle itself, but by extension now refers to the Scottish regiments which have adopted it.

Later on, when Nemo finally did reach Slumberland, he was constantly being woken up by Flip, a character who originally wore a hat that had ' Wake Up ' written on it.

Any list of these would have to include the Night of the Living Houses ( said to be the first comic strip to enter the collection of the Louvre ) wherein Nemo and a friend are chased down a city street by a gang of tenement houses on legs ; the Walking Bed, in which Nemo and Flip ride over the rooftops on the increasingly long limbs of Nemo's bed ( see illustration ); and the Befuddle Hall sequence, wherein Nemo and his friends attempt to find their way out of a funhouse environment of a Beaux-Arts interior turned topsy-turvy.

Instead of Flip or the Princess, Nemo meets Zorro, Alice and Jules Verne's Nautilus ( which was led by Captain Nemo ).

In children's literature, Maurice Sendak has said that this strip inspired his book In the Night Kitchen, and William Joyce included several elements from Little Nemo in his children's book Santa Calls, including appearances by Flip and the walking bed.

Flip recruits the aid of his uncle the Dawn Guard to wake Little Nemo and cause Slumberland to fade away, published in March 1906

Flip is a character in the comic strip Little Nemo in Slumberland.

In the movie Little Nemo: Adventures in Slumberland, Flip is portrayed as a mischief maker, much like in the comics.

Though maybe not seen as an enemy, he is portrayed as more of a bad influence toward Nemo which eventually ends up with Flip influencing Nemo to opening the forbidden door which releases the Nightmare King.

Though he did not know what was behind the forbidden door, Flip blames Nemo for the problem in order to save himself.

In the Nintendo game Little Nemo: The Dream Master, Flip makes a brief appearance in the first level, the Mushroom Forest.

The original set-up of the comic revolved around the nightly dreams of a little boy named Nemo ( meaning " nobody " in Latin ).

It involves a little boy called Nemo, who wears pajamas and travels to a fantasy world, but otherwise the connection to McCay's strip is a loose one.

Since its publishing, Little Nemo has had an influence on other artists, including Alan Moore, in Miracleman # 4, when the Miracleman family end up in a palace called " Sleepy Town ," which has imagery similar to Little Nemo's.

The comic strip Cul de Sac includes a strip-within-the-strip, " Little Neuro ," a parody of Little Nemo.

* In the Josie and the Pussycats episode " The Nemo's a No-No Affair ," a self-proclaimed descendant of Captain Nemo has a vendetta to sink every sea-bound vessel on Earth, with his reconstructed Nautilus ( controlled by his pipe organ ).

Browne's first two etched plates for Pickwick were signed " Nemo ," but the third was signed " Phiz ," a pseudonym which was retained in future.

The " Slumberland " of the title soon acquired a double meaning, referring not only to Morpheus's fairy kingdom, but to the state of sleep itself: Nemo would have dream-adventures in other imaginary lands, on the Moon and Mars, and in our own " real " world, made fantastic by the dream-state.

Its on screen title is Winsor McCay, the Famous Cartoonist of the N. Y. Herald and his Moving Comics, but it is usually referred to as Little Nemo.

In 1990, Capcom produced a video game for the NES, titled Little Nemo: The Dream Master ( known as Pajama Hero Nemo in Japan ), a licensed game based on the 1989 film.

The character and themes from the comic strip Little Nemo were used in a song " Scenes from a Night's Dream " written by Phil Collins and Tony Banks of the progressive rock group Genesis on their 1978 recording, ... And Then There Were Three ... Another progressive rock group, from Germany, called Scara Brae also recorded a musical impression of the comic on their rare self titled disc from 1981 ( the track was actually recorded 2 years earlier ).

" Beyond the Sea " was featured over the credits of the film Finding Nemo in 2003 and was also released on the film's soundtrack CD.

The film stars Sean Connery, who plays Allan Quatermain, and features Captain Nemo, Mina Harker, Rodney Skinner aka An Invisible Man ( the rights could not be secured to The Invisible Man ), Dr. Jekyll / Edward Hyde, Dorian Gray, and U. S. Secret Service agent Tom Sawyer ( Gray and Sawyer were not in the comics, although a painting of a young man holding a cane with " Dorian Gray " printed under it appears on the cover of Volume I ).

In 1911, he began presenting animated films on stage, first an animation of Little Nemo in Slumberland, then How a Mosquito Operates.

A year before the dream romps aimed at children of Little Nemo, and a full generation before the Dalis and Ernsts of the Surrealist movement unreleashed their subconsciousnesses on the public, Winsor McCay first produced the hallucinogenic comic strip Dream of the Rarebit Fiend.

The content of the strip played a much bigger role than it did in Little Nemo, whose focus was on beautiful visuals.

Similarly, Pixar created several short films as proofs of concept for new techniques for water motion, sea anemone tentacles, and a slowly appearing whale in preparation for the production of Finding Nemo.

The first, " Nemo Me Impune Lacessit ", is in Latin and means " No Man Challenges me with Impunity "; it is used by several Scottish regiments.

Throughout each level the player encounters several animals, which, after being fed, will allow Nemo to use their powers.

And thanks to an agreement between Psygnosis / Sony Imagesoft ( because of Sony already owning Psygnosis at that time ) and Disney, Traveller's Tales could produce several games based on Disney's properties, such as the Mickey Mouse game Mickey Mania and other games based on Pixar movies like Toy Story, Toy Story 2 and Finding Nemo ( the latter two thanks to agreements with Activision and THQ ).

In 2008, Disney began work redesigning several hundred of the rooms to a Finding Nemo theme.
