Initially, half of Connecticut was a part of the Dutch colony, New Netherland, which included much of the land between the Connecticut and Delaware rivers.

New Amsterdam () was a 17th-century Dutch colonial settlement on the southern tip of Manhattan Island that served as capital city of New Netherland.

The settlement, outside of Fort Amsterdam on Manhattan Island in the New Netherland territory ( 1614 – 1664 ), was situated between 38 and 42 degrees latitude and was a provincial extension of the Dutch Republic as of 1624.

The territory of New Netherland, containing the Northeast's largest rivers with access to the beaver trade, was originally a private, profit-making commercial enterprise focusing on cementing alliances and conducting trade with the diverse Indian tribes.

Peter Stuyvesant ( c. 1612 – August 1672 ), served as the last Dutch Director-General of the colony of New Netherland from 1647 until it was ceded provisionally to the English in 1664, after which it was renamed New York.

In May 1645 he was selected by the Dutch West India Company to replace Willem Kieft as Director-General of the New Netherland colony.

The Swedish settlement was incorporated into Dutch New Netherland on September 15, 1655.

This status lasted officially until the English conquest of the New Netherland colony was launched on June 24, 1664.

New Netherland, or Nieuw-Nederland in Dutch, was the 17th-century colonial province of the Republic of the Seven United Netherlands on the East Coast of North America.

During its first decades, New Netherland was settled rather slowly, partially as a result of policy mismanagement by the Dutch West India Company ( WIC ), and conflicts with Native Americans.

He was the Director of the Dutch colony of New Netherland from 1626 until 1633, and he founded the Swedish colony of New Sweden in 1638.

At the age of 45 in December 1625, Minuit was appointed the third director of New Netherland by the Dutch West India Company.

At the time, Breuckelen was part of New Netherland.

The English conquered the New Netherland colony in 1664, but the situation did not really change until 1682, when the area was included in William Penn's charter for Pennsylvania.

Upon returning, Block compiled a map, the first to apply the name " New Netherland " to the area between English Virginia and French Canada, where he was later granted exclusive trading rights by the Dutch government.

The WIC sought recognition for the area in the New World – which had been called New Netherland – as a province, which was granted in 1623.

In the Treaty of Hartford, the border of New Netherland was retracted to western Connecticut and by 1653, the English had overtaken the Dutch trading post.

England also took over the Dutch colony of New Netherland ( including the New Amsterdam settlement ) which was renamed the Province of New York in 1664.

The colony was conquered by the Dutch, who perceived the presence of Swedish colonists in North America as a threat to their interests in the New Netherland colony.

This war, provoked in 1664, contained quite a few great English victories in battle such as James II's taking of the Dutch colony of New Netherland ( present day New York ), but also Dutch victories, such as the capture of the Prince Royal during the Four Days Battle in 1666 which was the subject of a famous painting by Willem van de Velde.

The area was claimed as a part of the Dutch New Netherland province dating from 1614, where active trading in furs took advantage of the natural pass west, but the Lenape prevented permanent settlement beyond what is now Jersey City.

The timing of the settlement was terrible, as the English wrested New Netherland from the Dutch in 1664, and they had the settlement destroyed that same year with British reports indicating that “ not even a nail ” was left there.

Knickerbocker, also spelled Knikkerbakker, Knickerbakker, Knickerbacker, is a surname that dates back to the early settlers of New Netherland that was popularized by Washington Irving in 1809 when he published his satirical A History of New York under the pseudonym " Diedrich Knickerbocker ".

" In an interview with the author published at the end of the Harper Perennial paperback edition, Joseph O ' Neill remarks, " Clearly Netherland is having some sort of conversation with The Great Gatsby — saying goodbye to it perhaps, and to some of the notions associated with that wonderful book.

In 1634 he published in the Netherland two anti-Catholic Latin treatises: Elenchus Religionis Papisticae, an answer to a Catholic called Richard Short ; and Flagellum Pontificis, an argument in favour of Presbyterianism.

In 1617, Moryson published the first three volumes of An Itinerary: Containing His Ten Years Travel Through the Twelve Dominions of Germany, Bohemia, Switzerland, Netherland, Denmark, Poland, Italy, Turkey, France, England, Scotland and Ireland.

The Valley, including the future location of Philadelphia, became part of the New Netherland claim of the Dutch and Dutch explorer Cornelius Jacobsen Mey ( after whom Cape May, New Jersey is named ) charted the shoals Delaware Bay in the 1620s.

In May 1624, Noten Eylandt (" Island of Nuts "; officially renamed Governors Island in 1784 ) was the landing place of the first settlers in New Netherland.

They had arrived from the Dutch Republic with the ship New Netherland under the command of Cornelis Jacobsz May, who disembarked on the island with thirty families in order to take legal possession of the New Netherland territory.

On 4 May 1626, officials of the Dutch West India Company in New Netherland founded New Amsterdam, which subsequently became New York City.

Follow-up expeditions by Cornelius May in 1613, and Cornelius Hendricksen in 1614 mapped the shoreline of what would become Delaware for inclusion in the New Netherland colony.

Wouter van Twiller ( May 22, 1606 – buried August 29, 1654 ) was an employee of the Dutch West India Company and the Director-General of New Netherland from 1633 until 1638.

On October 11, 1614, May became a party to the New Netherland Company which received an exclusive patent from the States General for four voyages to be undertaken for three years to territories discovered between the 40th and 45th parallels at the exclusion of all other Dutch ( until January 1618 ).

May was the captain of the ship New Netherland who delivered the first boat load of colonists to New Netherland, first at Fort Orange, the trading post near present-day Albany, and then on Governors Island, in present-day NYC, that year.

Netherland ( 2008 ) is a critically acclaimed novel by Joseph O ' Neill.

In the weeks leading up the announcement of the 2008 Man Booker Prize, Netherland was spoken of by some literary pundits as being the favourite to win.

Cricket is a major part of the novella 24 for 3 ( 2007 ) by Jennie Walker and the novel Netherland ( 2008 ) by Joseph O ' Neill.

It also featured two key topics of the paper's historical focus: First, an analysis by Yale University professor David Bromwich of the vice presidency of Dick Cheney ; and second, British author Zadie Smith's essay that " dismantles the status quo in the form of a review of two new novels – Netherland and Remainder – that she holds up as representing where the novel's been and where it's going ".

As such, the seal of New Netherland featured the beaver ; likewise, the coats of arms of Albany, New York and New York City included the beaver.

His friend Willem Usselincx, also disappointed by the WIC, drew Minuit ’ s attention to Swedish efforts to have found a colony on the Delaware River south of New Netherland.

In 1642 they immigrated to the Dutch colony of New Netherland on the East Coast of North America.

On July 31, 1667, under the Treaty of Breda the Dutch offered New Netherland ( including New Amsterdam, modern-day New York City ) in exchange for their sugar factories on the coast of Suriname.

At the same time, the English invaded the Dutch colony of New Netherland in North America on 24 June 1664, and had control of it by October.

Chester County replaced the Pennsylvania portion of New Netherland / New York ’ s Upland, which was officially eliminated when Pennsylvania was chartered on March 4, 1681, but did not actually cease to exist until June of that year.

Englewood Township, the city's predecessor, is believed to have named in 1859 because the community had been called the " English Neighborhood ", as the first primarily English-speaking settlement on the New Jersey side of the Hudson River after New Netherland was annexed by England in 1664, though other sources mention the Engle family and the heavily forested areas of the community as the derivation of the name.

The Swedish settlement was incorporated into Dutch New Netherland on September 15, 1655.

Given the damage he had sustained, he decided against an assault on New York ( the former New Amsterdam ) to retake New Netherland.

Following the 1492 expulsion from Spain, and the subsequent expulsions in Portugal ( 1497 ), these Jews, the nascent Sephardim, settled mainly in the Ottoman Empire ( primarily in the province of Bosnia, Anatolia, the Levant and Ottoman North Africa ), Morocco and Algeria, southern France, Italy, Spanish North America, Puerto Rico, Cuba, Dominican Republic ( Southwest United States New Mexico ( Hispano ), Texas ( Tejano ), Arizona, and Mexico ), Spanish South America and Portuguese Brazil and Goa, as well as the Netherlands, whence a number of families continued on to the former Dutch possessions of Curaçao, Suriname, Aruba and New Netherland ( now New York ), England ( as well as English colonies such as Barbados and Jamaica ), Germany, Denmark, Poland, Austria and Hungary.

The Dutch name is found on the New Netherland map of 1639 by Johannes Vingboon, which is before any known English records.

Feliciano later wrote a song entitled " No Dogs Allowed " ( then lately in 1969 become a Netherland Top10 Hit on the charts ), which told the story of his first visit to London.

Following plans by King Gustavus Adolphus of Sweden to establish a Swedish colony in North America, the Swedes arrived in Delaware Bay on March 29, 1638 aboard the ships Kalmar Nyckel and Fogel Grip under the command of Peter Minuit, the former director general of the New Netherland colony.

The province's territory included the former territories of New Netherland, ceded to England by the Treaty of Westminster, including all of present-day New Jersey, the Dutch holdings on the Hudson River from New Amsterdam ( renamed New York City ) to Albany, as well as Long Island, Martha's Vineyard, and Nantucket.

The colonial Dutch Director-General of New Netherland, Peter Stuyvesant, ordered construction of the first wharf on the Manhattan bank of the lower East River sheltered from winds and ice, which was completed late in 1648 and called Schreyers Hook Dock ( near what is now Pearl and Broad Streets ).

Located on the Hudson River flood plain, the rudimentary " fort " was washed away by flooding in 1617, and abandoned for good when Fort Orange ( New Netherland ) was built in 1623.

Manufactured in a leased building off Orchard Street in Rochester, the 914 was introduced to the market at the Sherry Netherland Hotel in New York City on September 16, 1959.

Appropriately this place was on the edge of New Netherland and far enough out of reach of Massachusetts Bay and other colonies to give Underhill a respite from war, conflict, and religious intolerance.
