Newcastle finished runners-up in both the Premier League and FA Cup during his first season, but they could only finish 13th in 1997 – 98, which led to his dismissal the following season.

On 18 February 2006 he played in goal for the final ten minutes of the FA Cup fifth round tie against Newcastle United.

In the Balearic Islands side, he formed a formidable partnership with Marcelino Elena ( later of Newcastle United ), as the club finished fifth in 1997 – 98.

He broke his fifth metatarsal in a FA Cup match against Leeds United and then, in his first outing back, he broke his leg in a reserve clash against Newcastle United.

Keegan took Newcastle to two consecutive runners-up finishes in the league in 1995 – 96 and 1996 – 97, coming very close to winning the title in the former season.

He played as a striker in the top level of English league football for Southampton, Blackburn Rovers, Newcastle United and for the England national team.

On 30 July 1996, for a world transfer record-breaking £ 15 million Shearer joined his hometown club and league runners-up Newcastle United, managed by his hero Kevin Keegan.

Perhaps his best performance of the season came on 2 February 1997 when Newcastle went into the final 15 minutes of the game 3 – 1 down at home to Leicester City in the league, only for Shearer to win them the game 4 – 3 by scoring a late hat-trick.

After 46 goals in 170 league games for Newcastle, Waddle joined Tottenham Hotspur on 1 July 1985 for a fee of £ 590, 000 ( decided by a transfer tribunal ).

Under Souness, he started 13 league games, but did not play his first full Premier League game for Newcastle until April 2005.

On 5 December 1908, Sunderland achieved their highest ever league win, against north-east rivals Newcastle United.

On the resumption of national league football after the war, the club reformed but did not fare so well as a re-shaped team suffered a host of defeats – including a joint Football League record 13 – 0 defeat at Newcastle United.

The first sporting event held at the stadium was on 6 March 1999 when a then-record rugby league football crowd of 104, 583 watched the NRL first round double-header, featuring Newcastle v Manly and Parramatta v St George Illawarra Dragons.

In the 1935 – 36 season the Swans set a league record for longest distance travelled between consecutive matches, Good Friday Swans played at Plymouth ( 2 – 1 ), and Easter Saturday Swans played at Newcastle United ( 1 – 2 ).

Wayne James Bennett AM ( born 1 January 1950 ) is an Australian professional rugby league football coach and former player who's the current head coach for the Newcastle Knights of the NRL.

Newcastle led the league by 12 points at one stage, but were overhauled by United in the final three months of the season.
