In spite of the increase in numbers and prestige brought about by the conversions of Newman and other Tractarians of the 1840's and 1850's, the Catholic segment of England one hundred years ago was a very small one ( four per cent, or 800,000 ) which did not enjoy a gracious hearing from the general public.

The result were two volumes ( J. S. Bach ), which was published in 1908 and translated in English by Ernest Newman in 1911.

Newman and his wife, Krissie, operate the Ryan Newman Foundation, whose mission is to educate and encourage people to spay or neuter their pets and to adopt dogs and cats from animal shelters ; to educate children and adults about the importance of conservation so the beauty of the great outdoors can be appreciated by future generations ; and to provide college scholarship funding through the Rich Vogler Scholarship program, of which Newman himself was a recipient, to students interested in auto racing careers.

It was produced and directed by David Winters, who co-owned a number of racing cars with Newman.

The 1996 racing season was chronicled in the IMAX film Super Speedway, which Newman narrated.

But after 1974's The Towering Inferno, co-starring with his long-time personal friend and chief professional rival Paul Newman and reuniting him with Dunaway, became a tremendous box-office success, McQueen all but disappeared from Hollywood and the public eye, preferring to focus on motorcycle racing and traveling around the country in a motorhome and on one of his vintage Indian motorcycles.
