Despite all the consequences that arouse from his answer, Nolte's question was in fact a purely academic exercise.

Jäckel charged that Fest was guilty of diverting attention away from the issues by attacking Habermas's motives in criticizing Nolte, and not with concerning himself with what Habermas had to say Jäckel maintained that the Holocaust was indeed a " singular " historical event and criticized Fest for claiming otherwise Mommsen accused Fest of subordinating history to his right-wing politics in his defence of Nolte Mommsen went on to accuse Fest of simply ignoring the real issues such as the " psychological and institutional mechanisms " that explain why the German people accepted the Holocaust by accepting Nolte's claim of a " causal nexus " between Communism and fascism.

Hildebrand is pleased that Nolte denies the singularity of the Nazi atrocities ” Hans Mommsen defended Habermas against Hildebrand by writing :“ Hildebrand ’ s partisan shots can be easily deflected ; that Habermas is accused of a “ loss of reality and Manichaeanism ”, and that his honesty is denied is witness to the self-consciousness of a self-nominated historian elite, which has set itself the task of tracing the outlines of the seeming badly needed image of history ” Writing of Hildebrand's support for Nolte, Mommsen declared that: “ Hildebrand ’ s polemic clearly suggests that he barely considered the consequences of making Nolte ’ s constructs the centrepiece of a modern German conservatism that is very anxious to relativize the National Socialist experience and to find the way back to a putative historically “ normal situation ” In another essay, Mommsen wrote that Hildebrand was gulity of hypocrisy because Hildebrand had until 1986 always claimed that generic fascism was invalid concept because of the " singularity " of the Holocaust Mommsen wrote that " Klaus Hildebrand explicitly took sides with Nolte's view when he gave his previously stubbornly claimed singularity of National Socialism ( failing to appreciate that was, as is well known, the standard criticism of the comparative fascism theory )" Martin Broszat observed that when Hildebrand organized a conference of right-wing German historians under the auspices of the Schleyer Foundation in West Berlin in September 1986, he did not invite Nolte, whom Broszat observed lived in Berlin.

Regarding Nolte's claim that Chaim Weizmann on behalf of world Jewry had declared war on Germany in 1939, Broszat wrote Weizmann's letter to Neville Chamberlain promising the support of the Jewish Agency in World War II was not a " declaration of war " nor did Weizmann have the legal power to declare war on anyone Broszat commented " These facts may be overlooked by a right-wing publicist with a dubious educational background but not by the college professor Ernst Nolte " Broszat accused Michael Stürmer of attempting to create an " ersatz religion " in German history that Broszat argued was more appropriate for the pre-modern era then 1986 Broszat wrote that " Here the roads part " and argued that no self-respecting historian could associate himself with the effort to " drive the shame out of the Germans ".

Nolte's conclusion was that fascism was the great anti-movement: it was anti-liberal, anti-communist, anti-capitalist, and anti-bourgeois.

Nolte's theories about Nazi antisemitism as a rejection of modernity inspired the Israeli historian Otto Dov Kulka to argue that National Socialism was an attack on " the very roots of Western civilisation, its basic values and moral foundations ".

In Nolte's opinion, Nazi Germany was a " mirror image " of the Soviet Union and, with the exception of the " technical detail " of mass gassing, everything the Nazis did in Germany had already been done by the Communists in Russia.

Jäckel attacked Nolte's statement that Hitler had an especially vivid fear of the Soviet " rat cage " torture by arguing that Hitler's statement of February 1, 1943 to his generals about captured German officers going off to the " rat cage " clearly meant the Lubyanka prison, and this is not as Nolte was arguing to be interpreted literally.

" Against Nolte's claim that the Holocaust was not unique, but rather one of out many genocides, Jäckel rejected Nolte's view and those of his supporters like Joachim Fest by writing: " I, however claim ( and not for the first time ) that the National Socialist murder of the Jews was unique because never before had a nation with the authority of its leader decided and announced that it would kill off as completely as possible a particular group of humans, including old people, women, children and infants, and actually put this decision into practice, using all the means of governmental power at its disposal.

Diversity of character, and his trademark athleticism and gravelly voice, are signatures of Nolte's career.

Nolte's solid work continued with Lorenzo's Oil ( 1992 ) opposite Susan Sarandon, Mulholland Falls ( 1996 ), and Afterglow ( 1997 ) for which his co-star Julie Christie received her third Academy Award nomination.

However, Nolte's co-star, James Coburn, won the Academy Award for Best Supporting Actor for playing the father of Nolte's character.
