Tijuana is home of the Nortec, a fusion of Norteñas or typical northern-Mexican music and electronic music, such as the music of The Nortec Collective and other electronic music artists who have placed Tijuana in the international eye of specialized magazines and forums in recent years.

Artists within the genre, such as Maldita Vecindad y los Hijos del Quinto Patio, Nortec Collective and Café Tacuba, have set out to defy traditional expectations of Latin music.

Different individual projects create Nortec music.

The term Nortec is a conjunction of Norteño (" of " or " from the North ") and Techno, but mainly describes the collision between the music, style and culture of electronic music with those of norteño and tambora, two music genres indigenous to the North of Mexico.

Popular electronic music and synth-pop groups include Belanova, Jotdog, Sussie 4, Hocico, Amduscia and The Nortec Collective.

The various projects began producing and performing Nortec music around 1999.

According to the Collective's Myspace page, " For the time being, Nortec Collective has decided to release music separately ..." and " Until further notice, there will be not be any bookings for Nortec, Nortec Collective or Colectivo Nortec with the full 4 member line-up.

The Nortec Collective has borrowed several elements of Banda music sub-culture and have used them both in their songs ( Narcoteque, Almada ) and in their visuals and album covers.

Former Mexican President Ernesto Zedillo invited Nortec to provide music for the Mexican pavilion at the Expo 2000 in Hannover, and they have done remixes for Beck, Calexico, Ennio Morricone, Kronos quartet, Leigh Nash, and Lenny Kravitz among others.

Nortec ( from the combination of " norteño " and " techno ") is an electronic musical genre from Tijuana ( a border city in Baja California, Mexico ) that first gained popularity in 2001.

Nortec Collective is a musical ensemble formed by various individual one or two man production projects.

Nortec originated in 1999 when Pepe Mogt started by experimenting with samples of old banda sinaloense and norteño albums and altering them on his computer or filtering them with analog synthesizers.

The album featured tracks from the album Live @ The Clubhouse as well as remix tributes of " Genius Of Love " by such artists as Ozomatli, Nortec Collective, Kinky, Mexican Institute of Sound, Money Mark and The Pinker Tones.

In late 2007 he separated from the Nortec Colective and created the " Nortec Panoptica Orchestra " a band for his live shows.

In early 2008 Roberto decided to record a new solo album to push and further develop the Nortec sound, working independently from the Tijuana collective and with new musical partners Zoell Farrujia ( Ambiente ), Benjamin Rivera ( Grupo de Acero ), Edgar Hernandez ( Banda Aguacaliente ), Adrian Rodriguez ( Koñorteño ), and special guests: Javiera Mena, Khan Oral, Yerba Buena.

Some exponents are Nortec Collective, Wakal, Kobol ( band ), Murcof, Hocico and Mexican Institute of Sound.

Roberto A. Mendoza, known as Panoptica, has been one of the main figures in the Mexican electronic scene since the late 80s, founding bands like electro pos-industrial outfit Artefakto and in the late 90 ’ s the Tijuana based norteña-meets-techno Nortec Collective.

As a complement, there's also a " Colectivo Visual ": a group of designers and VJs who take care of the visual side of Nortec live shows.

In 2001, they were signed to a recording contract with Palm Pictures, that released their first album " Tijuana Session Volume 1 " under the name Nortec Collective.

The latter 2 would leave Nortec Collective in 2002.

In 2008, Nortec Collective ceased to function as a proper collective, with the various individual projects performing and recording separately.
