North of Swanage is the chalk Ballard Down, the eastern tip of which has been eroded to form Old Harry Rocks-a series of stacks, arches and caves jutting into the sea between Swanage Bay and Studland Bay.

These chalk beds were deposited at the bottom of what was once the Western Interior Seaway, a large shallow sea over what now is the midsection of the North American continent.

North of this lie the rolling chalk hills of the South Downs, beyond which lies the well-wooded Sussex Weald.

Around Coulsdon are attractive and important open spaces, largely chalk downland set upon the northern edge of the North Downs.

The first was about 425 000 years ago, when an ice-dammed lake in the southern North Sea overflowed and broke the Weald-Artois chalk range in a catastrophic erosion and flood event.

The Weald (), also called the Weald of Kent, is the name given to an area in South East England situated between the parallel chalk escarpments of the North and the South Downs.

Glacial striation and the presence of chalk and flint erratics that originated from the bed of the North Sea demonstrate the influence of ice action on the geomorphology of the islands.

The Alpine orogeny also led to the formation of more distant but smaller geological features such as the Weald-Artois Anticline in Southern England and Northern France, the remains of which can be seen in the chalk ridges of the North and South Downs in southern England.

Today, portions of the ancient Avalonia landmass occur in scattered outcrop belts along the eastern margin of North America.
