Notable American films from the war years include the anti-Nazi Watch on the Rhine ( 1943 ), scripted by Dashiell Hammett ; Shadow of a Doubt ( 1943 ), Hitchcock's direction of a script by Thornton Wilder ; the George M. Cohan biopic, Yankee Doodle Dandy ( 1942 ), starring James Cagney, and the immensely popular Casablanca, with Humphrey Bogart.

Notable names in mid-century modern design include Adrian Frutiger, designer of the typefaces Univers and Frutiger ; Paul Rand, who, from the late 1930s until his death in 1996, took the principles of the Bauhaus and applied them to popular advertising and logo design, helping to create a uniquely American approach to European minimalism while becoming one of the principal pioneers of the subset of graphic design known as corporate identity ; and Josef Müller-Brockmann, who designed posters in a severe yet accessible manner typical of the 1950s and 1970s era.

Notable among them are: ( 1 ) whether the word " eden " means a steppe or plain, or instead means " delight " or some similar term ; ( 2 ) whether the garden was in the east of Eden, or Eden itself was in the east, or whether " east " is not the correct word at all and the Hebrew means the garden was " of old "; ( 3 ) whether the river in Genesis 2: 10 " follows from " or " rises in " Eden, and the relationship, if any, of the four rivers to each other ; and ( 4 ) whether Cush, where one of the four rivers flows, means Ethiopia ( in Africa ) or Elam ( just east of Mesopotamia ).

Notable stagings in London and New York include Barrymore's 1925 production at the Haymarket ; it influenced subsequent performances by John Gielgud and Laurence Olivier.

Notable made-for-television productions of Hamlet include those starring Christopher Plummer ( 1964 ), Richard Chamberlain ( 1970 ; Hallmark Hall of Fame ), Derek Jacobi ( 1980 ; Royal Shakespeare Company, BBC ), Kevin Kline ( 1990 ), Campbell Scott ( 2000 ) and David Tennant ( 2009 ; Royal Shakespeare Company, BBC ).

Notable productions include Joan Sims in Breath of spring by Peter Coke in 1958, Tommy Steele in Half a Sixpence in 1963 ( 678 performances ), Bruce Forsyth in Little Me in 1964 ( 334 performances ), The Black Mikado ( 1975 – 76 ), and in the late 1970s the Kander and Ebb musical Chicago ran for 590 performances.

Notable performances include Emmi Kurowski in Fear Eats the Soul ( 1974 ), a role for which she won a German Film Award.

Notable recordings by the MSO include music of Alexandre Tansman and of Rudi Stephan, both for Chandos, and live-in-concert performances released under the orchestra's own label MSO LIVE.
