Notable jazz bassists from the 1940s to the 1950s included bassist Jimmy Blanton ( 1918 – 1942 ) whose short tenure in the Duke Ellington Swing band ( cut short by his death from tuberculosis ) introduced new melodic and harmonic solo ideas for the instrument ; bassist Ray Brown ( 1926 – 2002 ), known for backing Beboppers Dizzy Gillespie, Oscar Peterson, Art Tatum and Charlie Parker, and forming the Modern Jazz Quartet ; hard bop bassist Ron Carter ( born 1937 ), who has appeared on 3, 500 albums make him one of the most-recorded bassists in jazz history, including LPs by Thelonious Monk and Wes Montgomery and many Blue Note Records artists ; and Paul Chambers ( 1935 – 1969 ), a member of the Miles Davis Quintet ( including the landmark modal jazz recording Kind of Blue ) and many other 1950s and 1960s rhythm sections, was known for his virtuosic improvisations.

An alternative recording method not requiring a grid is also in use, where positions on a board are labeled left to right by letters a through h and top to bottom ( far-to-near ) by digits 1 through 8 ( Note that this is the opposite of the chess standard, with numerals running upward away from the side ( White ) that has a through h left to right, and also that the perspective may be that of either player ( with no fixed standard )), so that the very first move of a game may be ( based upon standard starting set-up ) d3, c4, f5 or e6.

On April 19, 2011, Country Music Television announced that Bridges had signed a recording contract with Blue Note Records / EMI Music Group.

After his cycle of intermittent recording sessions for Blue Note during 1947 – 1952, he was under contract to Prestige Records for the following two years.

One short studio session was made for Riverside ( only released later by its subsidiary Jazzland in 1961 ) and a larger group recording featuring Coltrane was split between that album and Monk's Music ; an amateur tape from the Five Spot ( not the original residency, but a later September 1958 reunion with Coltrane sitting in for Johnny Griffin ) was issued on Blue Note in 1993 ; and a recording of the quartet performing at a Carnegie Hall concert on November 29, previously " rumoured to exist ", was recorded in high fidelity by Voice of America, rediscovered in the collection of the Library of Congress in 2005 and released by Blue Note.

In 1951 Blue Note issued their first vinyl 10 " releases, and the label was soon recording new talent such as Horace Silver ( who would stay with Blue Note for a quarter of a century ), the Jazz Messengers ( originally a collaboration, but soon to become Art Blakey's group ), Milt Jackson ( as the leader of what became the Modern Jazz Quartet ) and Clifford Brown.

Another important difference between Blue Note and other independent labels ( for example Prestige Records, who also employed Van Gelder ) was that musicians were paid for rehearsal time prior to the recording session: this helped ensure a better end result on the record.

Blue Note was by then recording a mixture of established acts ( Rollins, Adderley ) and artists who in some cases had recorded before, but often produced performances for the label which by far exceeded earlier recordings in quality ( Blue Train is often considered to be the first significant recording by Coltrane as a leader ).

Although many of the acts on Blue Note were recording jazz for a wide audience, the label also documented some of the emerging avant-garde and free jazz players.

* Rudy Van Gelder ( born 1924 ), recording engineer who taped many jazz albums for Blue Note Records in his Hackensack recording studio in the 1950s.

Note: Reissues had some song titles renamed on each recording to reach different markets but the music remains the same.

By this time he had begun recording for Blue Note Records a collaboration that was to produce some of his most highly-regarded work on the albums Doin ' Alright, Dexter Calling ..., Go, and A Swingin ' Affair.

Gordon also visited the States occasionally for further recording dates with Blue Note Records.

A key recording in the early development of hard bop was Silver's composition " The Preacher ," which was considered " old-timey " or " corny ," such that Blue Note head Alfred Lion was hesitant to record the song.

His first recording as a leader was Complete Communion for Blue Note Records in 1965.

He began recording for Blue Note Records in 1956, eventually recording 25 albums as a leader for the company, with more than 250 musicians.
