Gary Numan toured Australia in May 2011 performing his seminal album The Pleasure Principle in its entirety to celebrate its thirtieth anniversary.

They toured extensively both in the UK and abroad — their diverse influences reflected in the kind of acts they appeared with: Pavement, Garbage, Luscious Jackson, Foo Fighters and Gary Numan amongst them.

Most recently ( 2009 ), Kane has toured Australia acting as support for electro legend Gary Numan.

Mescaleros Pablo Cook & Smiley together with Mike Peters ( The Alarm ), Derek Forbes ( Simple Minds ), Steve Harris ( Gary Numan ) are in Los Mondo Bongo ( a celebration of the music of Joe Strummer ) who together with Ray Gange ( DJ ) tour whenever possible performing those great Mescaleros tunes and have toured the UK and Canada.

Released in 1981 after Nash toured the United Kingdom in 1980 supporting Gary Numan, the album quickly gained cult status with its unique sound, created using electric mandolins, electric violins, drum machines, and other sonic devices.

Numan is considered a pioneer of commercial electronic music.

When Numan was 15 years old, his father bought him a Gibson Les Paul guitar, which he regards as his most treasured possession.

Later he picked the name " Numan " from an advert in the " Yellow Pages " for a plumber " A. Neumann ".

Numan rose to prominence at the end of the 1970s as front man, writer and producer for Tubeway Army.

A few months later Numan found success in the charts on both sides of the Atlantic with " Cars ", which peaked at No. 1 in the UK in 1979 and No. 1 in Canada and No. 9 in US in 1980.

The Pleasure Principle was a rock album with no guitars ; instead, Numan used synthesisers fed through guitar effects pedals to achieve a distorted, phased, metallic tone.

Around this time, Numan also developed his distinctive style.

According to Numan, this was an unintentional result of acne ; before an appearance on Top of the Pops, he had " spots everywhere, so they slapped about half an inch of white makeup on me before I'd even walked in the door.

His persona was aloof, alien, and androgynous ; Numan was not seen to be part of the punk or New Romantic movements.

During this period, Numan generated an army of fans calling themselves " Numanoids ", providing him with a fanbase which maintained their support through the latter half of the 1980s, when his fortunes began to fall precipitously.

In 1980 Numan topped the album charts with Telekon, with the concurrent singles " We Are Glass ", " I Die: You Die " and " This Wreckage " reaching No. 5, No. 6 and No. 20, respectively.

The final studio album of what Numan retrospectively termed the " Machine " section of his career, Telekon reintroduced guitars to Numan's music and featured a wider range of synthesisers.

Although considered a success, Numan claimed the tour actually lost him a great deal of money because of the vast expense in mounting it.

Moving away from the pure electro-pop that he had made his name with, Numan then experimented with jazz, funk and ethereal, rhythmic pop.

With his former backing band, Chris John Payne ( Keyboards, Viola ) Russell Bell ( Guitar ) and Ced Sharpley ( Drums ) now reformed as Dramatis, Numan contributed vocals to the minor hit " Love Needs No Disguise " from the album For Future Reference.

Numan supported the album with a concert tour in America in late 1982 ( where he was living as a tax exile ), which were his first series of live shows since his farewell at Wembley.

Warriors was the last album Numan recorded for Beggars Banquet Records, and was supported by a 40-date UK tour ( again with support from robotic mime and music duo Tik and Tok ) – Numan's first live tour in the UK since his Wembley appearances in 1981.

Numan also appears in the sci-fi music video, directed by John S. Bartley and filmed in Vancouver, which debuted in June 1999.

In 1979 they were asked to support Gary Numan on his first major British tour.

They were always grateful to Numan for his help and support.

They returned the favour some 13 years later when they asked Numan to support them on their arena tour in the mid-1990s.

Numan re-evaluated his career and went in a harsher, more industrial direction with his songwriting on the album Sacrifice — for the first time he played almost all the instruments himself.

Numan contributed vocals to four tracks on the April 2007 release of Fenton's debut solo album Artificial Perfect on his new industrial / electronic label Submission, including songs " The Leather Sea ", " Slide Away ", " Recall " and the first single to be taken from the album, " Healing ".

2001 did see the band with a stable line-up, achieved during the Aura sessions featuring Downes, Payne, guitarist Guthrie Govan and ex-Manfred Mann's Earth Band / The Firm / Uriah Heep / Gary Numan / AC / DC drummer Chris Slade ( who had first joined Asia in 1999, briefly ).

Numan became the first synth-based artist in Britain to break through into major commercial success.

The song was the first release credited solely to Gary Numan after he dropped the band name Tubeway Army, with which he had released four singles and two LPs, including the number one UK hit " Are ' Friends ' Electric?

Musically, the new song was somewhat lighter and more pop-oriented than its predecessors, Numan later conceding that he had chart success in mind: " This was the first time I had written a song with the intention of ' maybe it could be a hit single '; I was writing this before ' Are " Friends " Electric?

* The song is featured in several episodes of the first season of the UK comedy series The Mighty Boosh ( Numan himself appeared in one episode during the series ' third season ).

The album Clues, produced by Palmer and featuring Chris Frantz and Gary Numan, generated hits on both sides of the Atlantic, first with the radio-friendly single " Johnny and Mary " and then " Looking for Clues ".
