The book of Obadiah is based on a prophetic vision concerning the fall of Edom, a mountain dwelling nation whose Founding Father was Esau.

In particular, 1 Kings 18: 7-8 reads: And as Obadiah was in the way, behold, Elijah met him: and he knew him, and fell on his face, and said, Art thou that my lord Elijah?

According to the Sages, this was a prophetic reference to the End of Days, when Jacob's descendants will come to Mount Seir, the home of Edom, to deliver judgment against Esau's descendants for persecuting them throughout the millennia ( see Obadiah 1: 21 ).

He graduated from the University of Oxford, where he was an exhibitioner at University College tutored by Obadiah Walker, to become a Fellow of Lincoln College.

He is identified with the Obadiah who was the servant of Ahab, and it is said that he was chosen to prophesy against Edom because he was himself an Edomite.

Obadiah Dickerson was the first postmaster.

As early as 1747, Obadiah Baldwin operated an iron refining forge at that place, where water power was in ample supply, and raw materials, such as iron ore and wood for charcoal, were not too far away.

The property was originally part of a land grant given by William Penn to England-born Obadiah Bonsall.

In 1913 an extension to the town was laid out by the Cook and Neasley Realty Company on lands then owned by John Wechtenhiser and Obadiah Lohr.

He was taught by Obadiah Sedgwick, another Puritan, and excelled in both his studies and fencing.

In television, Postlethwaite's most notable performance was as the villain Sergeant Obadiah Hakeswill in the Sharpe television series and television films opposite actor Sean Bean's character of Richard Sharpe.

It was published in Vienna in 1819 under the pseudonym " Obadiah ben Pethahiah ".

Ever " an eager defender and maintainer of the university and its privileges ," he was hostile to the Royal Society, which he regarded as a possible rival, and in 1686 he gave an absolute refusal to Obadiah Walker, afterwards the Roman Catholic master of University College, though licensed by James II, to print books, declaring he would as soon " part with his bed from under him " as his press.

First come those prophets dated to the early Assyrian period: Hosea, Amos, Obadiah, Jonah, and Micah ; Joel is undated, but it was possibly placed before Amos because parts of a verse near the end of Joel ( 3. 16 in Hebrew ) and one near the beginning of Amos ( 1. 2 ) are identical.

Obadiah Walker ( 1616 – 21 January 1699 ) was an English academic and Master of University College, Oxford from 1676 to 1688.

:::* Obadiah Newcomb Bush ( January 28, 1797 – 1851 ) was the son of blacksmith Timothy Bush, Jr. and Lydia Newcomb, and was born in Penfield, New York on January 28, 1797.

In Rochester, Obadiah was employed as a schoolmaster and was also a well known abolitionist.

::::* James Smith Bush ( 1825 – 1889 ), an Episcopal priest in New Jersey, California, and New York, was the son of Obadiah Bush and the father of Samuel Prescott Bush.

* George Bush ( 1796 – 1859 ) was a biblical scholar who wrote the book Life of Mohammed, and a cousin of Obadiah Newcomb Bush.

Obadiah ’ s prophecy also includes a reminder that God ’ s judgment will be upon all nations.

In the introduction Obadiah says that he was induced to write his work by the fact that even so great a man as Maimonides had expressed the opinion that all the theories of Aristotle concerning the sublunary world are absolutely correct.

However, all of Amos after Amos 5: 19, Obadiah, Jonah, and the beginning of Micah are missing.

It was later revealed by Pepper to Tony upon going into the FBI Database that Force and Shockwave worked for the Maggia before being outfitted with the Guardsmen armor by Obadiah Stane which meant to Tony that Force and Shockwave had Count Nefaria fake a bank robbery all along.

Obadiah says it was all Dolores ' idea, and sets up a meeting with Dolores and Tony.

From several letters of that epoch addressed to his brother Hananeel at Bologna it would appear that Obadiah was in poor circumstances.

The later date would place Obadiah as a contemporary of the prophet Jeremiah, both of whom were prophets in the respective time periods.

Unlike other prophets, Obadiah does not present a “ turn or burn ” message, simply a message of inevitable doom as a consequence of previous actions.

Deane and J. R. Thomson write this valid conclusion, “ The Book of Obadiah is occupied with one subject – the punishment of Edom for its cruel and unbrotherly love conduct towards Judah ...” One can link this idea of punishment to one of the major prophets “ Ezekiel ” who “... interprets the exile to Babylon and the destruction of Jerusalem as deserved punishments for the sins of those who themselves committed them .” Verses 3-7 in Obadiah explain to the reader the reason for the punishment theme, “ Confidence in one ’ s power, intelligence, allies, or the topographical features of one ’ s territory is often mentioned as an attribute of those who foolishly confront the Lord and are consequently punished .” Although destruction is vital to understanding Obadiah, it is of note to understand the destruction being a consequence of action.

While on his way, Elijah meets Obadiah, the head of Ahab's household, who had hidden a hundred prophets of the God of Israel when Ahab and Jezebel had been killing them.

Over the succeeding 47 chapters, Jesus is recorded as developing the theme that the ancient prophets, specifically Obadiah, Haggai and Hosea, were holy hermits following this religious rule ; and contrasting their followers – termed " true Pharisees " – with the " false Pharisees " who lived in the world, and who constituted his chief opponents.

Obadiah is supposed to have received the gift of prophecy for having hidden the " hundred prophets " from the persecution of Jezebel.

For example the literary prophets Isaiah, Amos, Habakkuk, Joel, Micah, Obadiah, Zechariah, and Zephaniah, belonged to the tribe.

It is mentioned by the prophets ( Isaiah 15: 1 ; 16: 1 ; Obadiah 1: 3 ) as doomed to destruction.

The Masoretic text places Joel between Hosea and Amos ( the order inherited by the Tanakh and Old Testament ), while the Septuagint order is Hosea – Amos – Micah – Joel – Obadiah – Jonah.

The later period appears to be the scholarly consensus as Obadiah 1-9 parallels Jeremiah 49: 7-22.

Any date for the composition of Obadiah must be held tentatively.

So, according to Obadiah there will not remain even a remnant after Edom ’ s judgment ; This is in contrast to Amos 9: 12, where Amos refers to such a remnant, however, it is stated that their possession will be given to Israel.

Moreover, Frederick A. Tatford in Prophet of Edom ’ s Doom says that Obadiah ’ s prophecy is fulfilled today as there is currently no trace of anyone who may be identified as an Edomite.

Even less popular than Mrs Proudie is the bishop's newly appointed chaplain, the hypocritical and sycophantic Mr Obadiah Slope, who decides it would be expedient to marry Harding's wealthy widowed daughter, Eleanor Bold, and hopes to win her favour by interfering in the controversy over the wardenship.

Although these identifications are the popular opinion, it is to be noted that Dhul-Kifl is alternatively identified with either Joshua, Obadiah or Isaiah.

' In his Pagans Debt and Dowry ( 1651 ; 1671, a reply to Thomas Barlow ), which led to a controversy with Obadiah Howe, he argues that without the letter of the gospel heathens may be saved.
