When Langley received word from his friend Octave Chanute of the Wright brothers ' success with their 1902 glider, he attempted to meet the Wrights, but they politely evaded his request.

They were similar to truss bridges, having been developed by Octave Chanute, a railroad bridge engineer.

Three people in particular were active: Otto Lilienthal, Percy Pilcher and Octave Chanute.

Picking up where Lilienthal left off, Octave Chanute took up aircraft design after an early retirement, and funded the development of several gliders.

Pilcher's breakthrough, thanks to correspondence with another pioneer, Octave Chanute, was to stack smaller, lighter wings one atop the other in an arrangement we know today as the biplane or triplane.

Octave Chanute ( February 18, 1832, Paris – November 23, 1910, Chicago, Illinois ) was a French-born American railway engineer and aviation pioneer.

Octave Chanute was widely considered a brilliant and innovative railroad engineer.

The former Base, now turned to peacetime endeavors, includes the Octave Chanute Aerospace Museum, detailing the history of aviation and of Chanute Air Force base.

O ' Dwyer said Octave Chanute " encouraged " the Wrights to look into engines built by Whitehead.

In 1893 Montgomery visited the World's Columbian Exposition in Chicago, where he met Octave Chanute, who was chairing a conference on " Aerial Navigation ".

Octave Mirbeau ( 16 February 1848 – 16 February 1917 ) was a French journalist, art critic, travel writer, pamphleteer, novelist, and playwright, who achieved celebrity in Europe and great success among the public, while still appealing to the literary and artistic avant-garde.

In the past, when this date was occupied by the Octave Day of the Epiphany, his feast day was moved to 14 January.
