Much of the activities of the " Go Beyond Oil " campaign have been focused on drilling for oil in the Arctic and areas affected by the Deepwater Horizon disaster.

On August 28, 1859, George Bissell and Edwin L. Drake made the first successful use of a drilling rig on a well drilled especially to produce oil, at a site on Oil Creek near Titusville, Pennsylvania.

Initially calling their venture Dramatic Oil ( later renaming it Fuller Farm Oil ), the partners invested in a site along the Allegheny River at Franklin, Pennsylvania, in late 1863 for drilling.

In August 1892, George W. O ' Brien, George W. Carroll, Pattillo Higgins and others formed the Gladys City Oil, Gas, and Manufacturing Company to do exploratory drilling on Spindletop Hill.

Led by the Canadian oil company Africa Oil and its partner Range Resources, initial drilling in the Shabeel-1 well on Puntland's Dharoor Block in March of the year successfully yielded oil.

Oil and natural gas drilling is allowed within the park due to the inability of Congress to approve the purchase of the mineral rights within the park's boundaries after surveying the land in 1957.

The Carrizo Plain is located to the northwest, and the enormous Midway-Sunset Oil Field, the third largest oil field in the United States, is adjacent on the north and east.

Along State Route 33 to the south of the town is the Midway-Sunset Oil Field, the second-largest oil field in the contiguous United States ; within the town itself, as well as to the west is the McKittrick Field ; to the northwest is the huge Cymric Field ; and along Highway 33 beyond Cymric is the large South Belridge Oil Field, run by Aera Energy LLC.

The Oil discovery in July 1937 by the Ohio Co. a mile northwest of Noble really placed Noble on the map.

When the news broke that northwest Ohio had oil, Standard Oil of Cleveland decided to build a refinery in Lima.

Other large active oil fields include the Huntington Beach Oil Field, which underlies much of the city of Huntington Beach ; and the Torrance Oil Field, adjacent to the Wilmington field on the northwest.

After almost 80 more dry holes had been drilled throughout the state, Humble Oil Company ( later to become Exxon ) discovered Florida's first producing oil well on September 26, 1943 in the northwest portion of what is now Big Cypress National Preserve.

Humble also tried marketing under Enco in Ohio, but Standard Oil Company of Ohio ( Sohio ) protested that the Enco name and logo ( a white oval with blue border and red lettering ) too closely resembled that of Esso.

The Marathon Oil Co., then known as the Ohio Oil Co., made the first discovery and then Pure Oil Co., began operations and made Noble quite a place for employment in the oil fields.

With the discovery of oil in Lima in 1885, Ohio began what came to be called the " Oil Boom of Northwest Ohio.

The company was called the Trenton Rock Oil Company, and by 1886, had 250 wells from Lima to St. Marys, Ohio, and west to Indiana.

Fourteen independent Lima producers formed a combine – the Ohio Oil Company.

Eventually, it became Marathon Oil, still located in Findlay, Ohio.

The oil field was discovered in 1926, and the first buildings in town were basic housing and infrastructure for workers on the field, all built by the Big Lake Oil Company which became Plymouth Oil Company, which was purchased by the Ohio Oil Company, then purchased by Marathon Oil Company, and owned today by Kinder Morgan.
