The most obvious evidence of mining to the casual visitor to Dartmoor are the remains of the old engine-house at Wheal Betsy which is alongside the A386 road between Tavistock and Okehampton.

His family home, Lew Trenchard Manor near Okehampton, Devon, has been preserved as he had it rebuilt and is now a hotel.

West of Exeter, the A30 is dual carriageway through Devon and into Cornwall, bypassing Whiddon Down, Okehampton and Launceston.

To deter highwaymen from attacking travellers along the road between Tavistock and Okehampton, captured highwaymen were hanged from a gibbet on what is now known as ' Gibbet Hill '.

Occasionally reopening the whole line through to Okehampton and Exeter is suggested, since the current Plymouth to Exeter route is dependent on an extremely vulnerable route below the sea cliffs at Dawlish Warren.

The LSWR / Southern Exeter to Plymouth route behond Okehampton via Tavistock is also under consideration for reopening, partly due to population growth in Tavistock, and partly because of coastal erosion on the GWR route at Dawlish.

One Devon manufacturer, Definitely Devon was purchased by Robert Wiseman Dairies in March 2006, closing one of the two Devon dairies and moving all production to Okehampton.

On 20 November 1675, Shaftesbury seconded a motion by Charles Mohun, 3rd Baron Mohun of Okehampton calling on the king to end the dispute of Shirley v. Fagg by dissolving parliament.

The manor of Powderham became a subsidiary manor of the Bohun family, Earls of Hereford, which was given by Humphrey de Bohun, 4th Earl of Hereford ( 1298 – 1322 ) as the marriage portion of his daughter Margaret de Bohun ( d. 1391 ) on her marriage to Hugh Courtenay, 2nd Earl of Devon ( 1303 – 1377 ), feudal baron of Okehampton.

However, following a review of parliamentary representation in Devon by the Boundary Commission for England, which has increased the number of seats in the county from 11 to 12, the town of Okehampton and the area surrounding it have been transferred to the new Central Devon seat.

Plymouth, by far the largest city in Devon, was served via Okehampton and Tavistock.

The North Cornwall Company had wanted running rights as far as Exeter, but by now the L & SWR sought friendlier terms with its rival, the GWR, and to avoid offending them, the powers were stopped short at Okehampton.

This was regarded as somewhat of a miraculous survival for Okehampton by the local press ; as The Western Times & Gazette of April 11, 1963 put it: " ot many small Devon towns can congratulate themselves on the way they have fared in the Beeching Plan, but Okehampton, with a falling population well under 4, 000, is one of them.

As part of a local partnership scheme initiated and led by Devon County Council, Okehampton station was restored in 1997 and a Youth Hostel opened in the old goods shed, providing an activity centre as well.

Like many towns in the West Country, Okehampton grew on the medieval wool trade.

Later on, Crossing explored Tavistock, Coryton, Lydford, Okehampton, and the northern borders of the Moor, as well as South Brent, on its southern verge.

The L & SWR was able to build its own station, called Queen Street station ( now Exeter Central ), but due to the geography of the area the LS & WR was forced to construct a link line to the GWR station, where its trains would run briefly on GWR metals until they could proceed on their own line to Okehampton which opened in 1871 and reached Plymouth in 1876.

Okehampton ( 29 miles ) has a summer-only service from Exeter.

In 1804 he entered parliament as a member for Okehampton in Devon.

The Courtenay family rebuilt Okehampton Castle, until King Henry VIII seized the lands and had Henry Courtenay, 1st Marquess of Exeter executed for treason in 1539.
