In mid-1987, Oldsmobile attempted to bolster sagging Toronado sales by introducing a sportier model called the Troféo, which boasted standard leather bucket seats, faux dual exhaust, more-aggressive styling, and a stiffer suspension ( the highly-regarded corporate FE3 package, with retuned shocks, struts and other components ).

* Oldsmobile Delta 88 ( 1965 – 1989 ) While the " 88 " series of Oldsmobile's date back to the 1940s, and were offered in a variety of trim levels, the introduction of the Delta 88, which superseded the Super 88 line as Olds mid-level full-sized vehicles, was a watershed event for the division.

1965 Oldsmobile 98

The 1965 98 was completely redesigned from the ground up along with other full-sized General Motors cars but retained the larger C-body shared with Cadillac and Buick Electra in contrast with the B-body used in the Oldsmobile 88.

Between 1965 and 1975 Oldsmobile commissioned Cotner-Bevington to build professional cars, ( ambulances and hearses ), using the large Ninety-Eight chassis.

1965 was the last year Oldsmobile officially defined 442 designation.

Also new for 1965 was the three-speed Turbo Hydra-Matic automatic transmission which replaced the previous fluid-coupling Hydra-Matic used by Oldsmobile since 1940.

* 1964 – 1965 Oldsmobile Jetstar I

Pontiac's sister division, Oldsmobile, received better reviews from the automotive press and the car-buying public with the similar-bodied Cutlass.

It is worth mentioning that inside GM literature referred to the 1992 & 1993 Oldsmobile Achieva SCX as a 442, but no GM press literature mentions anything to this effect.

Many in the automotive press also criticized the car's new design as being too derivative of what they thought resembled a 3-year-old Buick or Oldsmobile full-size car.

Advice is given in some owner's manuals ( example: 1997 Oldsmobile Cutlass Supreme owner's manual ) that if the vehicle is parked on a steep slope using the park lock only, it may not be possible to release the park lock ( move the selector lever out of " P ").

The Oldsmobile Toronado ( 276 ) released in June 1968 was an updated version of the earlier 1967 Corgi release of the same model but re-coloured metallic red or metallic yellow, but the metallic gold coloured Chevrolet Camaro SS350 ( 338 ) issued in August 1968 was a new model of one of the latest generation ' pony ' cars from America.

Interestingly, the success of the GTO prompted Oldsmobile to rush out its own high-performance option package for the F-85 / Cutlass called the 442 that year, and the next year, for Buick to release a high-performance version of the Skylark called the Skylark Gran Sport, or GS.

Simultaneous to the engine's release in 1988, Oldsmobile attempted to further the Quad 4 name through highly publicized events featuring such cars as the Oldsmobile Aerotech.

The new Oldsmobile Turbo Hydra-Matic transmission was a vast performance improvement over the previous “ slim-jim ” Hydra-Matic transmission.

In 1988 the Indianapolis Motor Speedway chose Oldsmobile to pace “ The Greatest Spectacle in Racing ”, with retired United States Air Force General Chuck Yeager behind the wheel.

The first generation Oldsmobile Toronado and the Saab 99 and “ classic ” Saab 900 had their engines mounted approximately on the front axle center line, with power being taken by chains or a gear train to a transmission and differential mounted below and beside the engine.

* Oldsmobile Jetstar I ( 1964 – 1966 )-Life for the somewhat obscure Jetstar I started in 1964.

Those trials were sanctioned and supervised by NASCAR. Note: between 1964 and 1966, Oldsmobile named its least expensive full size model the Oldsmobile Jetstar 88 which the Jetstar I was not related to, and priced $ 500 –$ 600 below the Jetstar I.

Oldsmobile also introduced the Jetstar I for 1964.

Other full-sized Oldsmobile model lines included the low-priced Jetstar 88, the volume-selling Dynamic 88, sporty Jetstar I and the sporty and luxurious Starfire, all riding on a wheelbase.

This was still the most powerful engine in the Oldsmobile lineup and used only in the Starfire and the Jetstar I.

This Q-jet design proved good enough to last until 1990 ( Oldsmobile V8 applications ), with added computer controls in order to meet federal and CARB standards.

The Saab 99 turbo was one of the first " family cars " to be fitted with a turbo after the 1962-63 Oldsmobile Turbo Jetfire ; other contemporary turbocharged automobiles were very " specialised " vehicles and were difficult to drive.

The Caprice convertible would be discontinued after the 1975 model year along with its full-size B-body ragtop counterparts including the Oldsmobile Delta 88, Buick LeSabre and Pontiac Grand Ville.
