Omega Centauri is classified as a Shapley class VIII cluster, which means that its center is loosely concentrated.

This has prompted suspicion that Omega Centauri was the core of a dwarf galaxy that had been absorbed by the Milky Way.

To the unaided eye, Omega Centauri appears fuzzy and is obviously non-circular ; it is approximately half a degree in diameter, the same size as the full Moon.

A few of the brightest globular clusters are visible to the naked eye, with the brightest, Omega Centauri, having been known since antiquity and catalogued as a star before the telescopic age.

Based upon their element abundances, these stars may once have been members of Omega Centauri, a globular cluster that is thought to be the remnant of a dwarf galaxy that merged with the Milky Way.

These include the Pleiades, h / χ Persei, the Andromeda galaxy, the Carina Nebula, the Orion Nebula, Omega Centauri, 47 Tucanae and the globular cluster M13 in Hercules.

Centaurus A is located approximately 4 ° north of Omega Centauri ( a globular cluster visible with the naked eye ).
