It is also known as the widemouth bass, bigmouth, black bass, bucketmouth, Potter's fish, Florida bass, Florida largemouth, green bass, green trout, gilsdorf bass, linesides, Oswego bass, southern largemouth and ( paradoxically ) northern largemouth.

Oneida Lake is the northern border with part of Oswego County on the opposite shore.

A series of trading posts was established by both the British and French, such as Fort Oswego in 1722 and Fort Rouillé ( Toronto ) in 1750.

Shirley's efforts to fortify Oswego were bogged down in logistical difficulties and magnified by Shirley's inexperience in managing large expeditions.

Building on Vaudreuil's work harassing the Oswego garrison, Montcalm executed a strategic feint by moving his headquarters to Ticonderoga, as if to presage another attack along Lake George.

The Clackamas Indians once occupied the land that later became Lake Oswego, but diseases transmitted by European explorers and traders killed most of the natives.

The success of this industry greatly stimulated the development of Oswego, which by this time had four general stores, a bank, two barber shops, two hotels, three churches, nine saloons, a drugstore, and even an opera house.

The Oregon Iron and Steel Company adapted to the new century by undertaking programs in land development, selling large tracts of the it owned, and power, building a plant on Oswego Creek starting in 1905, and erecting power poles in subsequent years to supply power to Oswego citizens.

One of the land developers benefiting from sales by OI & S was Paul Murphy, whose Oswego Lake Country Club helped promote the new city as a place to " live where you play.

This was followed by the splitting off in 1798 from Herkimer County of two portions: one, Oneida County, was larger than the current Oneida County, including the present Jefferson, Lewis, and part of Oswego Counties ; another portion, together with a portion of Tioga County, was taken to form Chenango County.

The first newspaper was the Oswego Register, established in 1868 by E. R.

The Oswego Historical Museum and Genealogy Department, owned by the Oswego Historical Society, Inc., offers guided museum tours featuring period-style theme rooms, genealogical research, and tours of an original log cabin, a partially reconstructed building original to the Oswego townsite.

Parsons, Kansas-based Labette Community College holds classes on the Oswego High School site.
