Paille-maille ( also palle-maille, palle-malle or pall mall ; pronounced / pæl mæl /, / pɒl mɒl / or / pɛl mɛl /, depending on dialect ) is a lawn game that was mostly played in the 16th and 17th centuries, a precursor to croquet.

Paille-maille was popular in Italy, France and Scotland, and spread to England and other parts of Western Europe in the 17th century.

The first explanation is that the ancestral game was introduced to Britain from France during the reign of Charles II of England, and was played under the name of paille-maille or pall mall, derived ultimately from Latin words for " ball and mallet ".

In his 1810 book entitled The Sports and Pastimes of the People of England, Joseph Strutt describes the way pall mall was played in England in the early 17th century: " Pale-maille is a game wherein a round box ball is struck with a mallet through a high arch of iron, which he that can do at the fewest blows, or at the number agreed upon, wins.

Whilst the name pall mall and various games bearing this name may have been played elsewhere ( France and Italy ) the description above suggests that the croquet-like games were certainly popular in England as early as 1611.

Some early sources refer to pall mall being played over a large distance ( as in golf ), however an image in Strutt's 1801 book clearly shows a croquet-like ground billiards game ( balls on ground, hoop, bats and peg ) being played over a, garden-sized distance.

In Samuel Johnson's 1828 dictionary, his definition of " pall mall " clearly describes a game with similarities to modern croquet: " A play in which the ball is struck with a mallet through an iron ring ".

However, there is no evidence that pall mall involved the croquet stroke which is the distinguishing characteristic of the modern game.

Regardless when and by what route it reached England and the British colonies in its recognizable form, croquet is, like pall mall, trucco, jeu de mail and kolven, clearly a derivative of ground billiards, which was popular in Western Europe back to at least the 14th century, with roots in classical antiquity.

The name of the street is derived from " pall mall ", a mallet-and-ball game that was played there during the 17th century.

At the end of a word or morpheme, this produced all, ball, call, control, droll, extol, fall, gall, hall, knoll, mall, pall, poll, roll, scroll, small, squall, stall, stroll, swollen, tall, thrall, toll, troll and wall.

The pall of dust they raised made it difficult to see when the Aricaras charged again.

Though ordinaries are not easily defined, they are generally described as including the cross, the fess, the pale, the bend, the chevron, the saltire, and the pall.

The “ between ” indicates that the book is between two other objects ; in this case a “ pall ” which is the Y shaped object.

“ Charged ” means that the following objects are placed on the pall.

Continuing problems with the reliability of the magnetic tape systems used with the system cast a pall over the entire project.

According to law, a baronet is entitled to have " a pall supported by two men, a principal mourner and four others " assisting at his funeral.

In blazons ( a vexillological description using flag terminology ), the South African flag is described as " per pall fesswise gules, sable and azure, a fesswise pall vert fimbriated argent, Or and argent.

The National flag shall be rectangular in the proportion of two in the width to three to the length ; per pall from the hoist, the upper band red ( chilli ) and lower band blue, with a black triangle at the hoist ; over the partition lines a green pall one fifth the width of the flag, fimbriated white against the red and blue, and gold against the black triangle at the hoist, and the width of the pall and its fimbriations is one third the width of the flag.

Protesting " a pall of repression " and referring specifically to the USA PATRIOT Act as emblematic of that repression, it accuses the executive branch of usurping " the roles and functions of the other branches of government ," and continues, " We must take the highest officers of the land seriously when they talk of a war that will last a generation and when they speak of a new domestic order.

Other landmarks of the city include Palazzo del Principe, the Old Harbour ( Porto Antico ), transformed into a mall by architect Renzo Piano, and the famous cemetery of Staglieno, renowned for its monuments and statues.

Local attractions include Fort Michilimackinac, the Mackinac Bridge, the Mackinaw Crossings shopping mall, Mill Creek, the Old Mackinac Point Light, the Historic Village, the McGulpin Point Light, and the retired US Coast Guard Icebreaker Mackinaw.

* A shopping mall in Old Tallinn is named De la Gardie in honour of Jacob De la Gardie.

* Sunwen Road West ( or Sunwen Xilu ) in Zhongshan Old Town, a pedestrian mall lined with dozens of restored buildings from the colonial period in treaty port style.

Old Time Photography relocated into the mall ( but not within the park ) and restrooms did not return in this section of the park.

Albert Street and James Street were preserved only to the extent of their frontage around Old City Hall ( although at the request of the Church of the Holy Trinity, the city of Toronto required that pedestrians be able to cross through the mall where Albert Street once existed at all times, which is still possible.

Old Town has an active nightlife, a shopping mall, boutiques, outdoor cafés, nightclubs, comedy clubs, and varied restaurants,

Phase 1 ( commonly known as Old Wing ) of the shopping mall was completed and opened to public in August 1995.

The Farmers Market at Fairfax Avenue and 3rd Street still retained an Old World atmosphere until 2001, when construction of The Grove began, with open-air vegetable stalls and cafes, and many Jewish residents of the area continue to frequent the market as part of their shopping or kibbitzing routine, which retains an attraction for many seniors and immigrants ; but the addition of The Grove, an outdoor mall built on the former parking lot for the market, has brought new crowds and new visitors, including many tourists and chain-store shoppers as well as severe parking problems to the Farmers Market daily.

Over 100 stores and restaurants are in the mall, including anchor stores Macy's, Old Navy and Sears.

Woolworth operated a main store and a garden store in the mall ; the former is now mall space, while the latter was converted to Odd-Job Trading before becoming Old Navy.

Various other retailers are represented in the mall, including Vero Moda, Jack & Jones, Forever 21, Stuart Weitzman, Lacoste, Guess Accesoiries, Steve Madden, H & M, Zara, HMV, Le Château, Rockport Store, Sports Experts, Old Navy, Browns, B2, American Eagle Outfitters, Renaud-Bray, La Senza, Banana Republic, Subway, A & W, Marciano, Guess Gap, Aldo Groupe, Little Burgundy, Tommy Hilfiger, Aveda, The Body Shop, Crabtree & Evelyn, Telus, Rogers, Fido, Levi's, LensCrafters, Parasuco, Energie / Miss Sixty, GEOX, ECCO, Mephisto Concept Store, Oakley, Mexx, Printwell, Starbucks Coffee Shop, Jacob, Swarovski, The Children's Place, EB Games, Sephora, Joshua Perets, Bath & Body Works, Stitches, MAC Cosmetics, AIX Armani Exchange, BCBG Max Azria, American Apparel, IRIS, Apple, Manchu Wok ( restaurant ), Steve Madden, among others.

Dillard's, JCPenney, Sears, Von Maur, Younkers, and Old Navy are the six anchor stores for this mall.

A Walgreens pharmacy operated in the mall until 2003, when a new free-standing store was built off-site ; Old Navy opened a store in Walgreens ' place in 2006.

Old Chicago was a combination shopping mall and indoor amusement park that existed in the Chicago suburb of Bolingbrook, Illinois, from 1975 until 1980.

Unusual stores, boutiques, and a lack of recognizable anchor stores proved to be another of Old Chicago's undoings ; the mall was not very successful in attracting local residents week after week because of a lack of stores they wanted to shop in.

The now-expanded street where Old Chicago once stood is still named for the mall.

On April 14, 2005, a plan was set in motion to demolish the remnants of Dixie Square ( except for the Montgomery Ward building which was ostensibly being renovated ) and bring top " big-box " retailers to the former mall site, including Costco, Kohl's, and Old Navy.

Old Orchard Centre predates all of the other shopping centres in the neighbourhood and is a strip mall, as opposed to an enclosed mall.

A large strip mall along Highway 1 at the former 12 < sup > th </ sup > Street Gate entrance to Fort Ord opened in late 2007, housing popular retail stores such as Target, R. E. I., Michaels, Old Navy, Kohl's, and Best Buy.
