Lewiston's main industries are agriculture, paper and timber products production at the mill owned and operated by the Clearwater Paper Corporation ( until December 2008, a part of the Potlatch Corporation ) and light manufacturing.

On November 21, 2008, International Paper Company, the largest area employer, announced that it will cease operations of its Bastrop mill.

Three months after the announcement of the International Paper mill closing, Pilgrim's Pride, a poultry company, confirmed the closure of operations in nearby Arcadia in Bienville Parish, Athens in Claiborne Parish, Choudrant in Lincoln Parish, and Farmerville in Union Parish.

As of 2012, the paper mill is owned by International Paper, which acquired Temple-Inland.

The local paper mill, for many years Mead Corporation's Publishing Paper Division, is currently operated by NewPage Corporation ; located on the outskirts of the city alongside the Escanaba River, it is now the areas largest employer.

Also known as Paper Mill Village, Alstead is the location of the state's first paper mill.

Remington and Sons Paper Company's paper and pulp mill in Glen Park, NY

Oregon-American merged with Long-Bell Lumber Company in May, 1953, which itself merged with International Paper in November, 1957. International Paper judged the mill antiquated, and closed it on December 20, 1957.

In August 2008, Weyerhauser sold the mill to International Paper.

International Paper then closed the mill at the end of 2009, laying off 270 employees.

In the early 1880s, the New York and Pennsylvania Paper Mill in Castanea Township near Flemington began paper production on the site of a former sawmill ; the paper mill remained a large employer until the end of the 20th century.

Paper mills were once common here, and Domtar still maintains a paper mill there today.
