Its borders changed several times ; in 1821, part of the county was formed into Parke County, and later that year Putnam County was formed which also affected Vigo's borders.

To the north of Vigo County, the Wabash River defines the boundary between Vermillion and Parke counties ; the river then enters Vigo County and winds to the south-southwest, defining the southern portion of the county's western border before continuing south along Sullivan County's western border.

Raccoon and Wabash townships became part of Parke County when it was split from Vigo County in 1821.

Vigo County was formed in 1818 and included the area that later became Parke and Vermillion counties.

In 1821, Parke County was formed, and on January 2, 1824, the Indiana General Assembly created Vermillion County out of Parke County ; the act took effect on February 1.

U. S. Route 41 lies just to the east of the city, across the river in neighboring Parke County.

Montezuma is located on the western border of Parke County along the Wabash River, where U. S. Route 36 crosses the river.

A much smaller community of Pennsylvania Dutch-speaking Amish is found in Parke County, in western Indiana.

Parke was a delegate of Indiana Territory to the U. S. Congress.

Indiana State Road 163 runs for less than a mile in Parke County, crossing the river at Clinton and terminating at U. S. Route 41 in the far southwest corner of the county.

Parke County is part of Indiana's 8th congressional district ; Indiana Senate district 38 ; and Indiana House of Representatives districts 41, 42 and 44.
