The U. S. Navy Band's director throughout the 1960s was LCDR Anthony A. Mitchell who composed the march Our Nation's Capital, the official march of Washington D. C., as well as the John F. Kennedy Cultural Center March, and the National Capitol Parks March.

In 1999, a lawsuit was filed on her behalf against Outkast and LaFace Records due to their unauthorized use of her name in their 1998 song, " Rosa Parks ".

When the album itself was rejected by Reprise, the song " Sail On, Sailor " ( a collaborative, Brian Wilson-led effort dating from 1971 ) was inserted at the instigation of Van Dyke Parks and released as the lead single ; it promptly garnered a considerable amount of FM radio play, became a minor chart hit, and entered the band's live sets as a concert staple.

Unsatisfied with Pet Sounds collaborator Tony Asher's lyrics for " Good Vibrations ", Wilson first asked Parks to help him re-write the lyrics to the song ; Parks refused, stating, " No sense walking into someone else's problem.

Following a December 1966 recording session in which he was involved in a heated argument with Mike Love ( who vehemently criticized his lyrics for the song " Cabin Essence ") Parks ' involvement in SMiLE effectively ceased and he officially withdrew from the project in early 1967.

In 1968, Parks released his first solo album, Song Cycle ( produced by his friend Lenny Waronker ) which combined orchestral textures and traditional Americana-meets-psychedelic pop song structure.

Song Cycle established Parks ' signature approach of mining and updating old American musical traditions, including ragtime and New Orleans-style jazz, and includes the Randy Newman song " Vine Street ".

Disney hired Parks to arrange Terry Gilkyson's Academy Award nominated song " The Bare Necessities " for the 1967 feature The Jungle Book.

Parks has completed work with Brian Wilson on a new narrative song cycle entitled That Lucky Old Sun ( A Narrative ).

Labelle would announce a full-fledged reunion in 2005 after the group recorded the Rosa Parks tribute song, " Dear Rosa ", featured on LaBelle's TV show, Living It Up with Patti LaBelle, and after recording, with gospel artist Tye Tribbett, the gospel song, " Preaching to the Choir ", from the movie of the same name, which LaBelle starred in.

Parks had virtually become an American icon, singing the show's signature song, " There She Is, Miss America ", as the newly-crowned Miss America took her walk down the ramp at the end of each year's pageant.

It was the last time Parks performed this song live before his death the following year.

In August 2011 Ash collaborated with We Are Scientists to release a cover of the song " Washington Parks " by British songwriter Robert Manning, raising money and awareness for Multiple Sclerosis and The MS Society.

He never had to pay up, nor was he shy about lampooning the game show phenomenon ( especially a riotous parody of another quiz show Parks hosted, lancing Break the Bank in a routine called " Break the Contestant " in which players didn't receive a thing but were compelled to give up possessions when they blew a question.

In addition, Taylor serenades the winning contestant as a parody of Bert Parks having done the same on the Miss America Pageant.
