Peckham became popular as a wealthy residential area by the 16th century and there are several claims that Christopher Wren had local links.

In 1767 William Blake visited Peckham Rye and had a vision of an angel in a tree.

Since 1744 stagecoaches had travelled with an armed guard between Peckham and London to give protection from highwaymen.

Before Peckham Rye railway station was opened in 1865 the area had developed around two centres: north and south.

The first person to be convicted of speeding is believed to be Walter Arnold of East Peckham, Kent, who on 28 January 1896 was fined for speeding at.

Other famous writers who have lived in the area include the poet Robert Browning, who was born in Camberwell, and lived there until he was 28, and Muriel Spark, the author of The Prime of Miss Jean Brodie and The Ballad of Peckham Rye.

On Lee's return to Peckham, he was reunited with his mother after 28 years.

* Damilola Taylor was attacked by a local gang of youths on 27 November 2000 in Peckham, south London ; he bled to death after being stabbed with a broken bottle in the thigh, which severed the femoral artery.

Peckham announced in 2008 that he would not seek a fourth term, which follows the tradition of Theisen and Paesel who both served three terms, it was only Theisen who would actually seek a fourth term, albeit unsuccessful.

In 1932, Henry Jacques Gaisman, inventor and founder of the Gillette safety razor blade, purchased of land along Ridge Road, most of which he purchased from George A. C. Christiancy, son of the former U. S. minister to Peru, Isaac Peckham Christiancy.

He famously debated Aquinas on at least two occasions during 1269 and 1270, during which Peckham defended the conservative theological position, and Thomas put forth his views on the soul.
