The Mary Baker Eddy Library for the Betterment of Humanity is housed in an 11-story structure originally built for The Christian Science Publishing Society constructed between 1932 and 1934, and the present plaza was constructed in the late 1960s and early 1970s to include a 28 story administration building, a colonnade, and a reflecting pool with fountain, designed by Araldo Cossutta of I. M. Pei and Partners ( now Pei Cobb Freed ).

Pei spent ten years working with New York real estate magnate William Zeckendorf before establishing his own independent design firm that eventually became Pei Cobb Freed & Partners.

John Hancock Insurance chairman Robert Slater hired I. M. Pei & Partners to design a building that could overshadow the Prudential Tower, erected by their rival.

Hancock sued the glass manufacturers, Libbey-Owens-Ford, as well as I. M. Pei & Partners, for submitting plans that were " not good and workmanlike ".

LOF countersued Hancock for defamation, accusing Pei's firm of poor use of their materials ; I. M. Pei & Partners sued LOF in return.

It was also the year in which Pei's firm changed its name to Pei Cobb Freed & Partners, to reflect the increasing stature and prominence of his associates.

Ieoh Ming Pei ( born April 26, 1917 ), commonly known as I. M. Pei, is a Chinese American architect, often called a master of modern architecture.

In the words of his biographer, Pei has won " every award of any consequence in his art ", including the Arnold Brunner Award from the National Institute of Arts and Letters ( 1963 ), the Gold Medal for Architecture from the American Academy of Arts and Letters ( 1979 ), the AIA Gold Medal ( 1979 ), the first Praemium Imperiale for Architecture from the Japan Art Association ( 1989 ), the Lifetime Achievement Award from the Cooper-Hewitt, National Design Museum, and the 2010 Royal Gold Medal from the Royal Institute of British Architects.

Although the use of the graduated scale and grid reference for maps was not thoroughly described until the published work of Pei Xiu ( 224 – 271 CE ), there is evidence that in the early 2nd century CE, cartographer Zhang Heng was the first to use scales and grids for maps.

The Hai River (), previously called Bai He ( Chinese: 白河 ; pinyin: Bái Hé ; literally " White River "; Pei Ho in Western sources ), is a river in the People's Republic of China which flows through Beijing and Tianjin before emptying into the Yellow Sea at the Bohai Gulf.

In 232, Sun Quan had another misadventure involving his navy — as he sent his generals Zhou He ( 周賀 ) and Pei Qian ( 裴濳 ) to the nominal Wei vassal Gongsun Yuan, in control of Liaodong Commandery ( present-day central Liaoning ), to purchase horses, against the advice of Yu Fan-and indeed, he exiled Yu Fan to the desolate Cangwu Commandery ( roughly modern Wuzhou, Guangxi ) as punishment.

He was offered the post of Administrator of Dong Commandery ( 東郡 ), but he declined and returned to his home in Pei county.

Born in Qiao County, Pei Commandery ( present-day Bozhou, Anhui ), he was the second son of the late Han Dynasty warlord Cao Cao.

Liu Bei ( Wade-Giles spelling: Liu Pei ; ; 161 – 10 June 223 ), also known by his style name Liu Xuande ( Wade-Giles spelling: Liu Hsuan-te ), was a warlord, military general and later the founding emperor of the state of Shu Han during the Three Kingdoms era of Chinese history.

However, Pei Songzhi's commentary, based on the Dianlue ( 典略 ), said that Liu Bei was a descendant of the Marquis of Linyi ( 臨邑侯 ).

In Bo Yang's Modern Chinese Edition of Sima Guang's Zizhi Tongjian, for example, Bo cited seven different and discordant views of Jiang's career — ranging from ringing endorsements of his recklessness and loyalty for the sake of Shu ( Pei Songzhi ( 裴松之 ), commentator to the Records of Three Kingdoms ) to criticism of his constant draining campaigns ( Chen Shou, author of Records of Three Kingdoms ) to outright condemnation ( Sun Sheng ( 孫盛 ), author of the Spring and Autumn Annals of Jin ), each of which could be considered a potentially valid view of his complicated character.

Meanwhile, Yang Guozhong's wife Pei Rou, son Yang Xi ( 楊晞 ), the Lady of Guo, and the Lady of Guo's son Pei Hui ( 裴徽 ) tried to flee, but were killed in flight.

One day back in his hometown, a respectable man known as Lü Wen ( also called Lü Gong ), who had recently moved to Pei County, was visited by the most influential men in town.
