Literally, this translates as God-bearer or the one who gives birth to God ; historian Jaroslav Pelikan translated it more precisely as " the one who gives birth to the one who is God ".

Jaroslav Jan Pelikan ( December 17, 1923 – May 13, 2006 ) was a scholar in the history of Christianity, Christian theology and medieval intellectual history.

Regarding the Catholic interpretation of Matthew 16: 18-19, Jaroslav Pelikan writes, " As Roman Catholic scholars now concede, the ancient Christian father Cyprian used it to prove the authority of the bishop — not merely of the Roman bishop, but of every bishop ," referring to Maurice Bevenot's work on St. Cyprian.
