High-speed Pendolino services are operated from Helsinki to other major cities like Jyväskylä, Joensuu, Kuopio, Oulu, Tampere and Turku.

* 23 February 2007 – Grayrigg derailment, Grayrigg, England, United Kingdom: The 17: 15 Virgin West Coast Pendolino service from London Euston to Glasgow Central, travelling on the West Coast Main Line, derails due to stretcher bar disconnection.

As Pendolino deliveries began to come on stream from 2002 onward, No. 87005 City Of London was the first locomotive taken out of service, and although withdrawals were slower than expected due to the unreliability of the Pendolinos, the final day in service was set for 10 June 2005, by which time many locomotives had been withdrawn, and others transferred to other operators.

In September 2006, the Pendolino set a new speed record, completing the length of the West Coast Main Line from Glasgow to London in 3 hours, 55 minutes, beating the 4 hours 14 minute record for the southbound run previously set in 1981 by its ancestor, British Rail's Advanced Passenger Train.

Virgin Trains ' British Rail Class 390 | Class 390 Pendolino is the flagship train of the West Coast Main Line in the United Kingdom

The majority of stock used on the West Coast Main Line is new-build, part of Virgin's initial franchise agreement having been a commitment to introduce a brand-new fleet of tilting Class 390 " Pendolino " trains for long-distance high-speed WCML services.

In Portugal the Pendolino is named Alfa Pendular and is operated by the Portuguese state railway company CP.

It is one of three high-speed train services in Central and Eastern Europe-the other two are located in Croatia ( RegioSwinger ) and the Czech Republic ( ČD Class 680, also based on the Pendolino ).

Another type of tilting train that is seeing widespread use across Europe is the Pendolino.

The line is not electrified, so Virgin West Coast Pendolino trains have to be hauled by a diesel locomotive.

The Class 390 Pendolino is a type of electric high-speed train used in Great Britain.

As the nearest mainline station to Helsinki-Vantaa Airport, it is served by all the high-speed Pendolino trains on the Helsinki to Tampere and Lahti routes as well as other long-distance services.

Alfa Pendular is the name of the Pendolino high-speed tilting train of Portuguese state railway company CP.

Ironically, Pendolino export active tilting trains to the UK, the country that invented the active tilting train.

In recent decades, the principal solution to the problem of the WCML's curvaceous line of route has been the adoption of tilting trains, formerly British Rail's APT, and latterly the Class 390 Pendolino trains constructed by Alstom and introduced by Virgin Trains in 2003.

However this train proved that London-Glasgow WCML journey times of less than 4 hours were achieveable and paved the way for the later tilting Virgin Pendolino trains.

The modernisation plan unveiled by Virgin and the new infrastructure owner Railtrack involved the upgrade and renewal of the line to allow the use of tilting Pendolino trains with a maximum line speed of, in place of the previous maximum of.

The 53-strong Pendolino fleet, plus three tilting SuperVoyager diesel sets, were bought for use on these InterCity services.

Fiat supplied the bogies, the hydraulic tilting suspension, and the other parts of the tilting technology, thus the trains could be called Pendolino ( a Fiat trademarked brand name ).

Slovenian Railways ordered three Pendolino tilting trains for its main lines.

Speeds on the WCML have been increased in recent years with the introduction of tilting Pendolino trains and now match the 125 mph speeds available on the ECML.

The last trains to be built at the Washwood Heath plant before its closure in 2005 were the Class 390 " Pendolino " tilting trains for the West Coast Main Line modernisation.

Following privatisation of the UK railways, the test track was taken over by Alstom and electrified on the 25kV overhead system in order to test the Virgin Trains tilting Pendolino fleet.

This was for safety reasons following projected speed increases to 125 miles per hour on the line by Virgin Trains ' tilting Pendolino trains.

The tilting system for the APT became part of the Pendolino, while the products of its signalling and operations control research are used over a significant amount of the British railway system.

In the early 2000s it was leased to Alstom Transport Limited who upgraded and electrified the line and used it for testing the UK version of Pendolino tilting trains.
