Tuanku Imam Bonjol ( 1772 – November 6, 1864 ), also known as Muhammad Syahab, Peto Syarif, and Malim Basa, was a hero in the Indonesian struggle against Dutch rule.

It was designed by the London partnership George and Peto, and Sir Edwin Lutyens was also involved.

The Gardens ' footpaths are those originally created in 1889, and the bronze drinking fountain of a rearing horse was designed for the local estate agent Henry Lofts in 1891 by Harold Peto and Sir Ernest George, who was also the designer of 104-111 Mount Street.

In addition to his planting and structural work, Peto also created a cloister, his " Haunt of Ancient Peace ", where he displayed many of his treasures.

The following transgenic crops also received marketing approval in the US in 1995: canola with modified oil composition ( Calgene ), Bacillus thuringiensis ( Bt ) corn / maize ( Ciba-Geigy ), cotton resistant to the herbicide bromoxynil ( Calgene ), Bt cotton ( Monsanto ), soybeans resistant to the herbicide glyphosate ( Monsanto ), virus-resistant squash ( Asgrow ), and additional delayed ripening tomatoes ( DNAP, Zeneca / Peto, and Monsanto ).

His brother Julian Peto, with whom he has published work in mathematical statistics ( e. g. on logrank test ), is also a distinguished epidemiologist.

When his uncle died in 1830, Peto and his older cousin, Thomas Grissell ( who had been a partner to his uncle for five years ), went into partnership.

Peto then entered into partnership with Edward Betts, who had married his sister Ann.

Peto suffered in the financial crisis of 1866, and had to declare bankruptcy.

Peto and Sarah had ten children.

While Galt had intended to secure the funds to build the Montreal and Kingston Railway, he did not have the resources to compete with Peto, Brassey Jackson and Betts.

Twelve years before in 1535 a Franciscan friar named William Peyto ( Peto, Petow ), d. 1558 or 1559, had preached before the King at Greenwich “ that God's judgements were ready to fall upon his head and that dogs would lick his blood, as they had done to Ahab ”.

Peto had garden features designed by William Andrews Nesfield and Joseph Paxton.

The firm of Grissell and Peto ( 1830 – 1847 ) built many well-known buildings in London, including the Reform Club, the Oxford & Cambridge Club, the Lyceum, and St James's Theatre, Hungerford Market and Bloomsbury Chapel ( 1848 ), the first Baptist church with spires in London.

In May 1831 Peto married Mary Grissell, one of the sisters of his later partner, Thomas Grissell.

It was on his advice that Mary in 1557 forbade the landing of the Pope's messenger sent to confer legatine power on William Peto instead of Pole ; he was responsible for receiving the first Russian ambassador to England.

In 1854 during the Crimean War Peto, Betts and Brassey constructed the Grand Crimean Central Railway between Balaklava and Sevastopol to transport supplies to the troops at the front line.

John Frederick Peto ( May 21, 1854 – November 23, 1907 ) was an American trompe l ' oeil (" fool the eye ") painter who was long forgotten until his paintings were rediscovered along with those of fellow trompe l ' oeil artist William Harnett.

In 1852, the construction company Peto, Brassey and Betts ( represented in Scandinavia by Samuel Morton Peto ) was granted concession to build the line, which opened on October 6, 1854.

A partner in Grissell and Peto, he managed construction firms that built many major buildings and monuments in London, including The Reform Club, The Lyceum, Nelson's Column and the new Houses of Parliament ; which made him a millionaire.

He later covered the Siege of Sevastopol where he coined the phrase " thin red line " in referring to British troops, writing that " Russians dash on towards that thin red streak topped with a line of steel ..." Following Russell's reports of the appalling conditions suffered by the Allied troops conducting the siege, including an outbreak of cholera, Samuel Morton Peto and his partners built the Grand Crimean Central Railway, which was a major factor leading to the success of the siege.

His continued work into carcinogens at the Imperial Cancer Research Centre at the John Radcliffe Hospital, Oxford, working as part of the Clinical Trial Service Unit, notably including a study undertaken with Sir Richard Peto, in which it was estimated that tobacco, along with infections and diet, caused between them three quarters of all cancers, which was the basis of much of the World Health Organisation's conclusions on environmental pollution and cancer.

The house was remodelled and the grounds landscaped by Harold Peto including a Dutch water garden, subsequently largely overbuilt in a 1960s redevelopment.

He began painting trompe l ' oeil oils in the tradition of the great 19th century artists, William Harnett, Peto and Haberle.

He is considered one of the three major figures — together with William Harnett and John F. Peto — practicing this form of still life painting in the United States in the last quarter of the 19th century.

Iford is best known for its Grade I internationally listed Gardens, designed during the early part of the 20th century by the garden architect Harold Peto.

Peto employed Prince Albert's architect John Thomas ; the clock tower houses a clock designed by Benjamin Vulliamy.

In February 1855 the British government recognized Peto for his wartime services ; he was made a Baronet, of Somerleyton Hall in the County of Suffolk.

Peto is portrayed as being rude and vulgar, while Flek can only speak by saying the sound " guh-guh-guh-guh ".

Otis Kaye carried on the trompe l ' oeil tradition of William Harnett, John Frederick Peto, and John Haberle, and is esteemed particularly for his works which include U. S. currency.

Overall, Harnett's work is most comparable to that of the slightly younger John F. Peto.

Art historian Alfred Frankenstein has contrasted Haberle's work with that of his contemporaries: Peto is moved by the pathos of used-up things.

Doll and Peto are both celebrated epidemiologists, and their fame is largely based on their pioneering work in the study mentioned.

Peto's son, Harold Peto, became a noted garden-designer, but it is not known whether he was influenced by the gardens of Somerlyton.
