Phantasy Star II was the first 16-bit role-playing game released in the west ( it was released months before the original 8-bit Final Fantasy for the NES ) and it was the first video game to use a 6 mega-bit cartridge.

There are a total of eight playable characters in Phantasy Star II, each with his or her own personality, weapons and abilities ; Rolf uses swords and Rudo uses guns, while Kain is strong against robotic enemies and Hugh is strong against Biomonsters, and the female characters have their own arsenals of such these.

An important innovation in Phantasy Star that would later become common in console role-playing games was the use of pre-defined player characters with their own backstories, in contrast to computer role-playing games such as the Wizardry and Gold Box games where the player's avatars ( such as knights, clerics, or thieves ) were simply blank slates.

It was followed in 2001 by Phantasy Star Online ver.

Phantasy Star Online 2 was released in Japan for Windows in July 2012, and is due to be released for iOS and Android in late 2012 and for PlayStation Vita in 2013.

During development, the game was initially known as The Third World and had a vague sci-fi theme, before art director Satoshi Sakai produced a piece of concept art featuring a dragon and the decision was made to link it to the Phantasy Star series.
