Philo argues:

Philo argues that the designer may have been defective or otherwise imperfect, suggesting that the universe may have been a poor first attempt at design.

In Sophia ’ s opinion, love and desire are exclusive ; however, Philo argues that love and desire mix in things we find pleasurable.

Weaving together Jewish and Greek thought, Philo promoted praise without instruments, and taught that " silent singing " ( without even vocal chords ) was better still.

This invasion of the synagogues was perhaps resisted by force, since Philo then says that Flaccus " was destroying the synagogues, and not leaving even their name.

Philo even says, " the most merciless of all their persecutors in some instances burnt whole families, husbands with their wives, and infant children with their parents, in the middle of the city, sparing neither age nor youth, nor the innocent helplessness of infants.

The meaning of the earth being divided is usually taken to refer to a patriarchal division of the world, or possibly just the eastern hemisphere, into allotted portions among the three sons of Noah for future occupation, as specifically described in the Book of Jubilees, Biblical Antiquities of Philo, Kitab al-Magall, Flavius Josephus, and numerous other antiquarian and mediaeval sources, even as late as Archbishop Ussher, in his Annals of the World.

By that time, the origins of the Therapeutae were already lost in the past, and Philo was even unsure about the etymology of their name, which he explained as meaning either physicians of souls or servants of God.

Philo chases them down and takes their bikes ( which he repaints, repairs, and resells ), and every attempt they make to get even results in disaster.

New York dilettante Philo Vance decides to assist the police in investigating the death of another man-about-town because he finds the psychological aspects of the crime of interest and feels that they would be beyond the capacities of the police, even those of his friend District Attorney Markham.

In this context, Philo wrote that Caligula " regarded the Jews with most especial suspicion, as if they were the only persons who cherished wishes opposed to his ".

A detailed but spurious account of Ignatius ' arrest and his travails and martyrdom is the material of the Martyrium Ignatii which is presented as being an eyewitness account for the church of Antioch, and as if written by Ignatius ' companions, Philo of Cilicia, deacon at Tarsus, and Rheus Agathopus, a Syrian.

Given that both Jonathan and Peleg Card were scheduled to be tried by the Vermont Committee of Safety ( Peleg died 6 Sep 1777, and it is unknown if the trial was actually held ) it is likely that Philo Card is, in reality, Peleg Card ( 1740 – 1777 ) --- and Stephen ( 1748 – 1798 ) -- ( Source: National Archives of Canada, WO 28 / 10, Reel B-2867, pp. 17 – 18.

" Philo says that in response, the mobs " drove the Jews entirely out of four quarters, and crammed them all into a very small portion of one ... while the populace, overrunning their desolate houses, turned to plunder, and divided the booty among themselves as if they had obtained it in war.

In particular, the Angel of the Lord in the Hebrew Bible ( Old Testament ) was identified with the Logos by Philo, who also said that the Logos was God's instrument in the creation of the universe.

In other words, the activity of the Original Essence manifested itself in the creation of man, who at the same time is the image of the Heavenly Man and of the universe, just as with Plato and Philo the idea of man, as microcosm, embraces the idea of the universe or macrocosm.

The term " Logos " was used in Greek philosophy ( see Heraclitus ) and in Hellenistic Jewish religious writing ( see Philo Judaeus of Alexandria ) to mean the ultimate ordering principle of the universe.

The third and most lengthy dialogue, “ Philo and Sophia on the Origin of Love ” is a discussion about God ’ s love and how it encompasses all of existence, from the lowest creatures to the heavens and is the “ cohesion of the universe .” A discussion of beauty and the soul follows, with an analysis of Plato ’ s ideas.

This suggestion has been recently repeated by Jerome Murphy-O ' Connor: " It is difficult to imagine that an Alexandrian Jew ... could have escaped the influence of Philo, the great intellectual leader ... particularly since the latter seems to have been especially concerned with education and preaching.

that the real author was Herennius Philo of Byblus, who was born during the reign of Nero and lived till the reign of Hadrian, and that the treatise in its present form is a revision prepared by a later Byzantine editor, whose name may have been Ammonius.

Philo noted that " this class of persons may be met with in many places, for both Greece and barbarian countries want to enjoy whatever is perfectly good.

The history of Caligula's reign is extremely problematic as only two sources contemporary with Caligula have survived — the works of Philo and Seneca.

Philo had inferred from the expression, " Let us make man ," of Genesis that God had used other beings as assistants in the creation of man, and he explains in this way why man is capable of vice as well as virtue, ascribing the origin of the latter to God, of the former to His helpers in the work of creation.

It is recognized as the etymology of the form Ossaioi ( and note that Philo also offered an O spelling ) and Essaioi and Esseni spelling variations have been discussed by VanderKam, Goranson and others.

It is probably too much to assume a direct connection with Philo of Alexandria in this particular.

The slaughter of the lambs on the 14th is mentioned in The Book of Jubilees, a Jewish work of the Ptolemaic period, and by the Herodian-era writers Josephus and Philo.
