Hamnett Kirkes Pinhey, an English merchant, petitioned Lord Bathurst, Colonial Secretary at the time, for land in Canada as reward for his service in the British Army and received a 1000 acre ( 4 km² ) land grant.

The Pinhey family continued their British aristocratic values at Horraceville.

By this point Horace Pinhey had married and moved into the log house with his wife.

Pinhey also managed a full staff at his home including footmen and a butler.

Seeking greener pastures, Pinhey petitioned the Earl of Bathurst, Secretary of State for War and the Colonies at the time, for lands in Upper Canada and received a land grant.

In 1820, Pinhey travelled to March Township in Upper Canada and settled at a site on the Ottawa River.

In 1832, Pinhey was elected to the Legislative Assembly of Upper Canada in a by-election in Carleton County.

Pinhey continued to serve in various positions in local government and, in 1847, became a member of the Legislative Council of the Province of Canada.

By 1832, Hamnett Pinhey described the state of Richmond to the Freeholders of Carleton as, " a jail in itself.

Pinhey, who continued to prosper as a politician and insurance broker, named the estate, Horaceville, after his oldest son Horace.

The Ontario Heritage Trust erected a plaque for Honourable Hamnet Kirks Pinhey 1784-1857 at Horaceville, Pinhey's former estate beside the Ottawa River, Regional Road 21 north of Road 49, near South March-about 20 km from downtown Ottawa.

" On land granted to him for service in the Napoleonic Wars, Pinhey built a substantial estate comprising several log and stone structures.

In 1841, Pinhey added a central hall kitchen wing with a sweeping staircase leading upstairs to a dining room and a bedroom over the front entrance.

Even though Pinhey donated part of his land and the labour costs, the bishop still refused to consecrate the church.

Wilkinson obtained Pinhey ’ s Point heritage property.

Hamnett Kirkes Pinhey ( December 11, 1784 – March 3, 1857 ) was a Canadian landowner and politician.

Pinhey was born in Devonshire, England in 1784 to Mary Townley and William Pinhey.

He became a grocery and insurance merchant, a partner in Pinhey and Crosley: Merchant and Ship Insaurance Brokers.

Pinhey spoke fluent French and German, and claims to have been a secret spy from the Crown to the King of Prussia during the Napoleonic Wars.

By the age of 35, Pinhey had made enough money to retire comfortably.

Pinhey married Mary Ann Tasker on December 12, 1812.

Hamnett Pinhey was now a very wealthy middle class man.

Due to the class system in place in England at the time, Pinhey was not able to gain the power or privilege he desired.

Pinhey established himself as a gentleman farmer on his land and named this location Horaceville after his eldest son.
