The war affects Pinkard more fundamentally-and negatively-than many other characters in the series.

At his steel works job he shocks the black fellow-worker with whom he was previously friendly by hurling the Freedom Party greeting at him-a watershed moment where Pinkard sets out on an ominous road.

The Freedom Party quickly sets him up with a new occupation as a prison guard, and when the first camps for political prisoners are set up, Pinkard is offered a job as an assistant camp commandant at a Mississippi facility, and subsequently the head commandant at Louisiana's " Camp Dependable ".

When Pinkard comes up with an even more efficient way to " reduce the population ", i. e. gas chambers disguised as bath houses, he is promoted to the rank of Group Leader ( equivalent to a major general in the army.

Pinkard, however, succeeds in moving the killing operation and setting up Camp Humble in east Texas, near the town of the same name, with the killing facilities further " improved " with the addition of crematoriums.

His first combat action was against Negro rebels in South Carolina in 1915, after which Rodriguez served with Jefferson Pinkard on the West Texas front of the Great War.

After training, Rodriguez was sent to Camp Determination, where he was reunited with Jefferson Pinkard, his friend from the Great War.

" Sweet Georgia Brown " is a jazz standard and pop tune written in 1925 by Ben Bernie and Maceo Pinkard ( music ) and Kenneth Casey ( lyrics ).

As Bernie's then nationally famous orchestra did much to popularize the number, Pinkard cut Bernie in for a share of the tune's royalties by giving him a co-writer credit to the song ..

When Pinkard complains, he gets a phone call directly from Ferdinand Koenig ( who under the innocuous title of " Attorney General " actually heads the analog of the S. S .), who informs him that no extra food is forthcoming, and hints that a solution is available-" reducing the population " by taking black prisoners to deserted areas and having firing squads shoot them.

A guard named Chick Blades kills himself by venting carbon monoxide into his car, giving Pinkard the idea to put blacks in trucks and gas them while simply driving to the burial sites, avoiding the need for the killer to actually witness what he is perpetrating.

In early 1945, Pinkard is executed by hanging.

Challoner is believed to have had the assistance of Robert Pinkard ( alias Typper ), the London agent for Douay College, in preparing the 1749 and 1750 revisions.
