Pobol y Cwm ( People of the Valley ) is a Welsh language serial produced by the BBC since October 1974.

The longest-running television soap opera produced by the BBC, Pobol y Cwm was originally transmitted on BBC Wales television and later transferred to the Welsh-language station S4C when it opened in November 1982.

Apart from Rugby specials, Pobol y Cwm is consistently the most watched programme of the week on S4C, and in 1994 was briefly shown in the rest of the UK on BBC2 with English subtitles.

BBC Wales also produces a large amount of Welsh language programming for S4C, particularly news, sport and other programmes, especially the soap opera Pobol y Cwm (' People of the Valley ').

Gruffudd started his acting career at the age of 13 in a Welsh television film called Austin ( 1986 ) and then later moved on to the Welsh language soap opera Pobol y Cwm ( People of the Valley ) from 1987 to 1994. He also played football with the Pobol y Cwm football team Cwmderi FC alongside co-stars Hywel Emrys, Gwyn Elfyn and Ieuan Rhys.

With the large studio at Llandaff being used for Pobol y Cwm, BBC Wales invested into Upper Boat Studios in Pontypridd to house several productions, notable centred around Doctor Who and its sister productions Torchwood and The Sarah Jane Adventures.

The site was designed to house the productions Doctor Who, The Sarah Jane Adventures, Casualty, Upstairs Downstairs and Pobol y Cwm, however following the death of Sarah Jane actor Elisabeth Sladen in 2011 and the cancellation of Upstairs Downstairs, these two series will cease to be produced.
