Polar Trappers is a 1938 Donald Duck and Goofy cartoon in the South Pole trapping polar animals.

According to Nalan Koc of the Norwegian Polar Institute this is the first time it has been clear since they began keeping records in 1972.

Drygalski led the first German South Polar expedition with the ship Gauss to explore the unknown area of Antarctica lying south of the Kerguelen Islands.

En route the South Pole party discovered the Beardmore Glacier, ( named after Shackleton's patron ), and became the first persons to see and travel on the South Polar Plateau.

Stenkul Fiord was first explored in 1902 by Per Schei, a member of Otto Sverdrup's 2nd Norwegian Polar Expedition.

On September 6, 2007, Belgian-based International Polar Foundation unveiled octagonal spaceship-like Princess Elisabeth station, the world's first zero-emissions polar science station in Antarctica to research on climate change.

The coin was struck to mark the 125th anniversary of the International Polar Year scientific studies and features a " world first " metallic-blue finish meant to mimic the Arctic's icy hues.

Based on studies by glaciologist Lonnie Thompson, professor at Ohio State University and researcher with the Byrd Polar Research Center, a number of indicators shows there was a global change in climate 5, 200 years ago, probably due to a drop in solar energy output as hypothesized by Ohio State University.

The Universal Transverse Mercator ( UTM ) and Universal Polar Stereographic ( UPS ) coordinate systems both use a metric-based cartesian grid laid out on a conformally projected surface to locate positions on the surface of the Earth.
