Lastly, in 1981 Porsche entered 1 of 2 specially built 924 Carrera GTP's ( Aka: 944GTP Le Mans ) which Porsche Motorsports introduced a new prototype highly modified 2. 5 liter I4 engine.

In 1984 VW decided to stop manufacturing the engine blocks used in the 2. 0 924, leaving Porsche with a predicament.

In 1985 the Victoria and Albert Museum in London selected the Opinel as part of an exhibit celebrating the “ 100 most beautiful products in the world ”, featuring the Opinel alongside the Porsche 911 sports car and the Rolex watch.

In circuit racing, the new car was very hard to master, though, due to the swing axle rear suspension design initially adopted by Porsche ( relatively advanced for its day, it is now utterly obsolete because of its many problems ).

Rear swing axle suspension with reduction gearing from the discontinued split-screen Volkswagen Transporter was used until 1973, when it was replaced with double-jointed axles used by Porsche and IRS semi-trailing arm setup as used on the 1303 and US-spec Beetles.
