John Hanson, Jr. was born at " Mulberry Grove " in Port Tobacco Parish in Charles County in the British Province of Maryland.
According to one of several legends, the town was given its name by Colonel Samuel Chapman, whose family owned of land in Southern Maryland, including what would become the areas of La Plata and Port Tobacco.
The town was founded in 1888, after the river flowing into the previous county seat, Port Tobacco ( a few miles to the west ), silted up, ending that town's utility as a port.
The courthouse was built there after the Port Tobacco courthouse burned down ( arson suspected, but unproven ).

The population was 13 at the 2010 census, making Port Tobacco the smallest incorporated town in Maryland.

Settled by the English in the 17th century and established in 1727, the town on the Port Tobacco River soon became the second largest in Maryland.
