Between 1884 and 1910 thousands of Fresno scrapers were produced at the Fresno Agricultural Works which had been formed by Porteous, and used in agriculture and land levelling, as well as road and railroad grading and the construction industry.

The towed Fresno Scraper, invented in 1883 by James Porteous, was the first design to enable this to be done economically, removing the soil from the cut and depositing it elsewhere on shallow ground ( fill ).

Porteous bought the patents held by Deidrick, Dusy, and McCall, gaining sole rights to the Fresno Scraper.

On June, 16, 1885, Dusy and his partner Abijah McCall were issued U. S. Patent 320, 055, for their improvement on the Buck Scraper, invented by James Porteous of Fresno, California.

On April 17, 1883, Deidrick received U. S. Patent 275, 893 for his horse-drawn scraper, which was a variation on the Buck Scraper, invented by James Porteous of Fresno, California.

Porteous purchased the patents held by Dusy and McCall and also a patent held by William Deidrick as he perfected the scraper, which Porteous also manufactured at his factory in Fresno, California.

Dr. Abram Hoffer had approached him to request that he recommend it to the senior citizens in the social housing development which Porteous administered.

Porteous insisted he would not recommend anything to anyone which he had not first tried himself.

In 2001, Porteous filed for bankruptcy, which led to revelations in the press about his private life, specifically the fact that he was alleged to have had close ties with local bail bond magnate Louis Marcotte III, at the center of a corruption probe, which has more recently led to his being the subject of investigation himself by federal investigators.

A native of Montreal, Porteous first met Pierre Trudeau in 1957 when the two were students traveling in West Africa for a World University Service of Canada seminar, for which Porteous represented McGill University, where he had previously been responsible for the outstanding 1957 student production of My Fur Lady, which he co-wrote.

In 1950 Struik published his Lectures on Classical Differential Geometry, which gained praise from Ian R. Porteous:

According to Skipp Porteous of the Massachusetts-based Institute for First Amendment Studies, Barton was listed in promotional literature as a " new and special speaker " at a 1991 summer retreat in Colorado sponsored by Scriptures for America, a far-right Christian Identity ministry headed by Pastor Pete Peters, which has been linked to neo-Nazi groups.

They were probably influenced by Scots versions of popular French romances that were also produced in the period, including The Buik of Alexander, Launcelot o the Laik and The Porteous of Noblenes by Gilbert Hay.

Norman W. Porteous was one of the first to postulate that an anonymous writer wrote the book during the persecution under Antiochus.

The even more serious Porteous Riots broke out in Edinburgh after the King pardoned a captain of the guard ( John Porteous ) who had commanded his troops to shoot a group of protesters.

As regent, Caroline considered the reprieve of Captain John Porteous, who had been convicted of murder in Edinburgh.

Ten men of the Small Scale Raiding Force under Captain P. A. Porteous ( VC ) landed 200 yards to the north-west of Selle Rocque on a shingle beach and made three unsuccessful attempts to climb the cliff in front of them.

Porteous finally managed to climb up the bed of a stream and pulled the others up with a rope.

Hawkshaw, ancestral home of the Porteous family at Tweedsmuir in Peeblesshire, a peel tower dating from at least 1439, no longer stands but its site is marked by a cairn.

The St. Paul Consolidated Oil Company was formed on September 24, 1910, USD $ 600, 000 in capital, R. C. as president and W. T. Knowles as secretary, with five wells in Fresno County.

In 2004, the team was sold to an investment group that moved the team to Fresno to become the Central Valley Coyotes, while a new Bakersfield Blitz was formed.

The region known in the late 19th century as the Mussel Slough country was mostly in what was then Tulare County, California, with a small portion in what was then Fresno County ( later the entire area became part of Kings County after the latter was formed in 1893 ).
