Stephen Dedalus, in Joyce's Portrait of the Artist as a Young Man envisages his future artist-self " a winged form flying above the waves [...] a hawk-like man flying sunward above the sea, a prophecy of the end he had been born to serve ”.

The name Daedalus is used in James Joyce's novels A Portrait of the Artist as a Young Man and Ulysses, though spelled differently in the last name of the character Stephen Dedalus.

Dylan Marlais Thomas ( 27 October 1914 – 9 November 1953 ) was a Welsh poet and writer whose works include the poems, " Do not go gentle into that good night ", " And death shall have no dominion ", the " play for voices ", Under Milk Wood, and stories and radio broadcasts such as A Child's Christmas in Wales and Portrait of the Artist as a Young Dog.

Ten stories in his next book, Portrait of the Artist as a Young Dog ( 1940 ), were based less on lavish fantasy than The Map of Love and more on real life romances featuring himself in Wales.

Dylan Thomas stayed with Hughes and wrote his book Portrait of the Artist as a Young Dog whilst living at Castle House.

Stephen J. Joyce, grandson of James Joyce, at a 1986 academic conference of Joyceans in Copenhagen, said “ If my grandfather was here, he would have died laughing ... Dubliners and A Portrait of the Artist as a Young Man can be picked up, read, and enjoyed by virtually anybody without scholarly guides, theories, and intricate explanations, as can Ulysses, if you forget about all the hue and cry.

Critically, it is considered a Bildungsroman – i. e., a novel of self-cultivation – and would be included in the same genre as Dickens's own Great Expectations ( 1861 ), Charlotte Brontë's Jane Eyre, Thomas Hardy's Jude the Obscure, Samuel Butler's The Way of All Flesh, H. G. Wells's Tono-Bungay, D. H. Lawrence's Sons and Lovers, and James Joyce's A Portrait of the Artist as a Young Man.

But the author of Dubliners, A Portrait of the Artist and Ulysses is not a charlatan, but an artist of very considerable proportions.

In James Joyce's A Portrait of the Artist as a Young Man, the Irish poet Thomas Moore is described by the protagonist Stephen Dedalus as being " a Firbolg in the borrowed cloak of a Milesian.

Yeats, took on a wider importance in the history of literary modernism, as the subsequent correspondence between the two led to the serial publication, at Pound's behest, of A Portrait of the Artist as a Young Man in The Egoist.
