In July 1977, Cope was one of the founders of Crucial Three, a Liverpool punk rock band in which he played bass guitar.

After the Crucial Three, Julian Cope and Pete Wylie formed The Nova Mob, a conceptual band named after a gang mentioned in William Burroughs ' novel ' Nova Express '.
