Edwin Powell Hubble ( November 20, 1889 – September 28, 1953 ) was an American astronomer who played a crucial role in establishing the field of extragalactic astronomy and is generally regarded as one the most important observational cosmologists of the 20th century.

In 1949 he played the alcoholic hero's barman in Michael Powell and Emeric Pressburger's The Small Back Room.

However, advocates of this point of view ignore the many successful and well-adjusted Vietnam veterans who have played important roles in America since the end of the Vietnam War such as Al Gore, Fred Smith ( founder and president of Federal Express ), Colin Powell, John McCain, Craig Venter ( famed for being the first to map the human genome ), and many others.

On 5 January 1990, addressing Conservatives in Liverpool, Powell claimed that if the Conservatives played the " British card " at the next general election, they could win ; the new mood in Britain for " self-determination " had given the newly independent nations of Eastern Europe a " beacon ", adding that Britain should stand alone, if necessary, for European freedom, adding: " We are taunted –- by the French, by the Italians, by the Spaniards -– for refusing to worship at the shrine of a common government superimposed upon them all ... where were the European unity merchants in 1940?

Gable had played a similar character also named " Blackie " two years earlier in the smash hit gangster epic Manhattan Melodrama, with William Powell and Myrna Loy.

* Rock bands – Jeff Wayne and Rick Wakeman with Kevin Peek did a Progressive Rock version of the entire suite with added incidental music on an album called " Beyond The Planets " which also contained occasional narration by Patrick Allen. An arrangement of " Mars " by progressive-rock trio Emerson, Lake & Powell appeared on their eponymous album ( 1985 ) and was played in their 1985 – 86 live shows. King Crimson, Greg Lake's first successful band performed a rock arrangement of " Mars " live in 1969.

In the 2011 BBC Radio 4 adaptation Robert Powell played the narrator ; he has known Garner since he was a schoolboy at Manchester Grammar School.

The studio's original choice to play " Irene ," the part eventually played by Carole Lombard, was Constance Bennett, and Miriam Hopkins was also considered, but the director, Gregory LaCava, would only agree to Bennett if Universal borrowed William Powell from MGM.

Powell, for his part, would only take the role if Carole Lombard played " Irene ".

He followed William Powell and Basil Rathbone portraying the series detective Philo Vance, a cosmopolitan New Yorker, once in 1935 in The Casino Murder Case, but his major role came in 1943's Watch on the Rhine, when he played a man working against the Nazis ( he had played the same role on Broadway in 1941 ).

In the early 1940s, Powell played in a few dance orchestras, including that of Cootie Williams, whom Powell's mother decided her son should play for and tour with ( rather than accept an offer from Oscar Pettiford and Dizzy Gillespie, whose modernist quintet was about to open at a midtown nightclub ).

In 1965, Powell played only two concerts: one a disastrous performance at Carnegie Hall, the other a tribute to Charlie Parker on May 1 with other performers on the bill, including Albert Ayler.

The book was the basis for Round Midnight, a film inspired by the lives of Powell and Lester Young, in which Dexter Gordon played the lead role of an expatriate jazzman in Paris.

He also reveals that President George W. Bush, then – Secretary of State Colin Powell, and other GOP leaders played a major role in ending his career as Senate Republican Leader.

During the 1950s, Bogarde came to prominence playing a hoodlum who shoots and kills a police constable in The Blue Lamp ( 1950 ) co-starring Jack Warner and Bernard Lee ; a handsome artist who comes to rescue of Jean Simmons during the World's Fair in Paris in So Long at the Fair, a film noir thriller ; an accidental murderer who befriends a young boy played by Jon Whiteley in Hunted ( aka The Stranger in Between ) ( 1952 ); in Appointment in London ( 1953 ) as a young Wing-Commander in Bomber Command who, against orders, opts to fly his 90th mission with his men in a major air offensive against the Germans ; an unjustly imprisoned man who regains hope in clearing his name when he learns his sweetheart, Mai Zetterling, is still alive in Desperate Moment ( 1953 ); Doctor in the House ( 1954 ), as a medical student, in a film that made Bogarde one of the most popular British stars of the 1950s, and co-starring Kenneth More, Donald Sinden and James Robertson Justice as their crabby mentor ; The Sleeping Tiger ( 1954 ), playing a neurotic criminal with co-star Alexis Smith, and Bogarde's first film for American expatriate director Joseph Losey ; Doctor at Sea ( 1955 ), co-starring Brigitte Bardot in one of her first film roles ; as a returning Colonial who fights the Mau-Mau with Virginia McKenna and Donald Sinden in Simba ( 1955 ); Cast a Dark Shadow ( 1955 ), as a man who marries women for money and then murders them ; The Spanish Gardener ( 1956 ), co-starring Michael Hordern, Jon Whiteley, and Cyril Cusack ; Doctor at Large ( 1957 ), again with Donald Sinden, another entry in the " Doctor films series ", co-starring later Bond-girl Shirley Eaton ; the Powell and Pressburger production Ill Met by Moonlight ( 1957 ) co-starring Marius Goring as the German General Kreipe, kidnapped on Crete by Patrick " Paddy " Leigh Fermor ( Bogarde ) and a fellow band of adventurers based on W. Stanley Moss ' real-life account of the WW2 caper ; A Tale of Two Cities ( 1958 ), a faithful retelling of Charles Dickens ' classic ; as a Flt.

Le Mesurier played Sandman in the latter film, and Dilys Powell, in The Sunday Times, wrote that he was " allowed a gentler and subtler character than usual ".

Various other members ( now including a second guitarist in addition to Fuller ) played in the band at this time ; however, the most significant were Jim Reese ( formerly of the Embers ) on guitar, and Dalton Powell ( who had previously played piano for the Embers ) on drums, while Bobby Fuller and Randy Fuller stayed constant on guitar and bass, respectively.

Robert Powell ( born 1 June 1944 ) is a British television and film actor, best known for the title role in Jesus of Nazareth ( 1977 ) and as the fictional secret agent Richard Hannay.

For this role, Powell was nominated for a BAFTA award, and collected the TVTimes Best Actor award for the same performance.

In 1978, Powell took the leading role of Richard Hannay in the third film version of The Thirty Nine Steps.
