President Kasavubu had clashed with Prime Minister Lumumba and advocated an alliance with the West rather than the Soviets.

* February 5 – February 9 – In Congo, President Joseph Kasavubu names Joseph Ileo as the new Prime Minister.

* June 24 – Joseph Kasavubu is elected as the first President of the independent Congo.

* October 13 – Congo President Joseph Kasavubu fires Prime Minister Moise Tshombe and forms a provisional government, with Evariste Kimba in a leading position.

Joseph Kasa-Vubu ( alternatively Joseph Kasavubu, 1910 sources have 1913, 1915 and 1917 – March 24, 1969 ) was the first President ( 1960 – 1965 ) of the Republic of the Congo, today called Democratic Republic of the Congo.

* President Joseph Kasavubu and Prime Minister Patrice Lumumba attempted to dismiss each other in September 1960.

In July 1964 he returned to the Congo to serve as prime minister in a new Coalition government, but was dismissed from his position in October 1965 by President Joseph Kasavubu.

In 1965, Prime Minister Joseph Mobutu, who had staged a successful coup against President Kasavubu, brought charges of treason against Tshombe, who again fled the country, and settled in Spain.

Lumumba was elected Prime Minister, while Kasavubu became Congo's first President.

In November 1965, Tshisekedi took part in the second Mobutu coup which led to the impeachment of President Kasavubu and his prime minister Kimba.

In response, “ the secretary general suggested the dispatch of UN technical personnel to the Congo to assist in restoring order and discipline within the armed forces .” Canadian National Defence assumed that the United Nations would ask for French-speaking military advisers, the army maintained a standby list of one hundred officers, including many who were bilingual and could be posted abroad on short notice .” Before Hammarskjold could put his plan into action, however, a second Congolese request arrived, sent directly to the secretary general from President Joseph Kasavubu and Prime Minister Joseph Lumumba, “ the Congolese leaders asked for UN military forces to counter the violent Belgian intervention .” Again Canada offered combat troops stating that if the need arose for Canadian military intervention in the Congo Canada could also “ deploy one of three French speaking battalions made ready for UN Service .” The offer for combat troops was again refused, though Hammarskjold officially accepted the Canadian French-speaking officers.

By December, 1958, when ' Abdallah Ibrahim became President of the Council, elections had even greater importance.

The reports of President Nasser's pledges which Hammarskjold was relaying from Cairo to Washington became increasingly incomprehensible to other diplomats, including the Israeli Foreign Minister, Mrs. Golda Meir.
