During this private screening Presley's mother, Gladys, cried at the death of her son's character at the end, leading Presley to insist that his characters would never die on screen again.

Presley would relax during filming by giving karate demonstrations with his friend and employee, Red West, which resulted in Presley's fingers becoming bruised and swollen.

Presley had been at Sun Records since the beginning of his career, but Sam Phillips, the owner of Presley's current label, was aware that for Presley to have any kind of a successful future in the business he would need the backing of a much larger label.

Despite this, Phillips was not keen to let him go easily, advising Parker that he would require $ 40, 000 to secure the release of Presley's contract, a completely unheard-of sum at the time.

However, RCA Victor producer Steve Sholes was convinced that Presley's style of music would be a huge hit with the right label, and he began talks with Parker.

Regardless of the success that Parker and Presley had achieved, Parker was still struggling to believe that Presley's career would last longer than a year or two.

Throughout the 1960s Parker would continually renegotiate Presley's film contracts, often paying little attention to the scripts or the thoughts of his client.

Parker hoped that marriage would not only boost Presley's career but also possibly tame him.

Following the success of Presley's Las Vegas return, Parker signed a contract with the International Hotel to guarantee Presley would play a month-long engagement for $ 125, 000 a week, an unheard-of sum at the time.

He would usually fly ahead to the venues and prepare the way for Presley's entourage to follow.

In later years, several of Presley's inner-circle would tell of how difficult it was to persuade Presley to quit the drugs.

Presley's main doctor, George C. Nichopoulos, would often replace Presley's medication with placebos in an attempt to wean him off the drugs.

At the time, Presley's back catalog was not considered that important and RCA initially calculated it at being worth much less, but in later years it would become one of the most valuable catalogs in the music business.

The sale of the catalog to RCA meant that after his death Presley's estate would not receive any royalties for his songs prior to 1973.

Several members of Presley's band later stated that Parker had no idea just how bad the situation was, although others have stood by the suggestion that Parker just didn't want to admit there was such a problem because he didn't know how to deal with it and was worried about any negative publicity it would create.

Parker later claimed that Presley had asked him to make the contract so demanding so that they would not offer him the part, although many of Presley's friends have said he was furious at losing the role.

The talks had included details about European tours, and buying out Presley's contract would not have been a problem for Hulett and his company.

According to Presley's friend, Larry Geller, Parker secretly wanted the book to be published, hoping that it would open Presley's eyes to how bad he had got and persuade him to do something about it.

Presley's impact on him was likewise emphatic: " I saw a cousin of mine dance to ... ' Hound Dog ' and I had never seen her get up and be moved so much by anything.

With a publishing deal in place, Axton arranged through Presley's manager Colonel Tom Parker to present the song to Presley at the annual Country Music Disc Jockey Convention in Nashville, Tennessee, where he was to be named the most promising male country star of 1955.

The film was originally intended to be a straight acting role for Presley, but due to the popularity of the single " Love Me Tender " and Colonel Tom Parker's desire to promote Presley's films with a soundtrack and vice versa, four songs were added to the film.

However, working with Presley's manager " The Colonel " proved to be Edwards ' impetus to leave pop and rock songwriting ; Presley's songwriters were forced to make huge monetary concessions in order to have their songs recorded by the great artist.

Parker appeared to be in complete control during Presley's time away, but he was worried about the outside influence that he may come across in Germany.

From 1974 onwards, Presley's weight gain and prescription drug abuse became too much to be controlled.

Other accounts suggest he slumped in his chair and muttered, " Oh dear God " and immediately contacted Vernon Presley and advised Presley's father that his son's image needed to be protected.

The song " Flaming Star " would be the title track of Elvis Sings Flaming Star, available at first only through select retail stores featuring products by the Singer sewing machine company as a promotional tie-in with Presley's 1968 Christmas television special, which Singer had sponsored.

It would be Presley's final number-one single in the U. S. before his death (" The Wonder of You " in 1970, " Way Down " in 1977 and a posthumous remixed release of " A Little Less Conversation " in 2002 all hit number one on the British charts, followed by re-issues of several previous chart toppers in 2005 ).

Because of their ability to get records and covers pressed unquestioned by these pressing plants, bootleggers were able to produce artwork and packaging that a commercial label would be unlikely to issue-perhaps most notoriously the 1962 recording of The Beatles at the Star Club in Hamburg, which was bootlegged as The Beatles vs. the Third Reich ( a parody on an early US album entitled The Beatles vs. the Four Seasons ), or Elvis ' Greatest Shit, a collection of the least successful of Elvis Presley's recordings, mostly from film soundtracks.
