Loewe retired to Palm Springs, California while Lerner went through a series of musicals, some successful, some not, with such composers as André Previn ( Coco ), John Barry ( Lolita, My Love ), Leonard Bernstein ( 1600 Pennsylvania Avenue ), Burton Lane ( Carmelina ) and Charles Strouse ( Dance a Little Closer, based on the film, Idiot's Delight, nicknamed Close A Little Faster by Broadway wags because it closed on opening night ).

In May 2009, Houston Grand Opera premiered a two act opera Brief Encounter based on the story, with music by André Previn from a libretto by John Caird.

In late 1970, the London Symphony Orchestra invited Shankar to compose a concerto with sitar ; Concerto for Sitar and Orchestra was performed with André Previn as conductor and Shankar playing the sitar.

After the war he appeared on hundreds of recordings including sessions with Duke Ellington, jazz pianists Oscar Peterson, Michel Petrucciani and Claude Bolling, jazz violinist Jean-Luc Ponty, jazz violinist Stuff Smith, Indian classical violinist L. Subramaniam, vibraphonist Gary Burton, pop singer Paul Simon, mandolin player David Grisman, classical violinist Yehudi Menuhin, orchestral conductor André Previn, guitar player Bucky Pizzarelli, guitar player Joe Pass, cello player Yo Yo Ma, harmonica and jazz guitar player Toots Thielemans, jazz guitarist Henri Crolla, bassist Jon Burr and fiddler Mark O ' Connor.

It also appeared on Decca with Vladimir Ashkenazy, with Charles Dutoit and Andre Previn for DG, and on Phillips and Sony with Bernard Haitink ( see Bernard Haitink for a complete list ).

The film was lavishly produced ( the only musical to be filmed in 3-D ), with songs by Cole Porter, choreography by Hermes Pan, and musical direction by Andre Previn.

Among conductors with whom it is most associated are, in its early days, Hans Richter, Sir Edward Elgar, and Sir Thomas Beecham, and in recent decades Pierre Monteux, André Previn, Claudio Abbado, Sir Colin Davis and Valery Gergiev.

Fleischmann then turned to André Previn with the hopes that his conducting credentials and time spent at Hollywood Studios would add a local flair and enhance the connection between conductor, orchestra, and city.

Richardson recorded the narration for Prokofiev's Peter and the Wolf, and the superscriptions for Vaughan Williams ' Sinfonia antartica-both with the London Symphony Orchestra, the Prokofiev conducted by Sir Malcolm Sargent and the Vaughan Williams by André Previn.

André Previn ( 1976 – 84 ) succeeded Steinberg and brought the Pittsburgh Symphony Orchestra to a national audience with a PBS television series, Previn and the Pittsburgh.

Conducted by André Previn, with Eric Morecambe as soloist, Morecambe claims he is playing " all the right notes, but not necessarily in the right order ".

Previn is initially enthusiastic as a guest, but he is perplexed by the news that he will not, after all, be conducting Yehudi Menuhin in Mendelssohn's Violin Concerto, but Edvard Grieg's A minor Piano Concerto with Eric as piano soloist:

Eric goes on to treat Previn and the orchestra with his customary directness (" In the Second Movement, not too heavy on the banjos ") but consistently fails to enter on the conductor's cue.

As with André Previn, if they appeared uncooperative, Eric would grab any guest by the lapels and pull them to his face in a threatening manner.

In 1989, he was offered the title of Principal Guest Conductor by Executive VP Ernest Fleischmann and was to take the orchestra on a tour of Japan ; however, controversy ensued when André Previn, the orchestra's Music Director at the time, was not consulted on either the Principal Guest appointment or the tour, and objected to both.

Continued friction between Fleischmann and Previn led to Previn's resignation in April 1989.

( The first and most famous of these was the one based on My Fair Lady, recorded by Previn, Manne, and bassist Leroy Vinnegar in 1956.

He played bass on Previn and Manne's My Fair Lady album, one of the most successful jazz records ever produced.

As a staff producer at BMG Classics ( RCA Red Seal ) for nearly a decade, he collaborated with many of their most important artists such as André Previn, Sir Colin Davis, Leonard Slatkin, The Tokyo String Quartet, János Starker, Luciano Berio and the pianists Alicia de Larrocha, Evgeny Kissin, Rudolf Firkusny and Van Cliburn.

This is because, when the orchestra begins, Eric is standing right next to Previn.

Even then, he cannot see Previn when the conductor gestures for him to begin playing, because the piano lid obscures his view.

Previn called him " the kindest, wisest man I can remember, and there was nothing about conducting he didn't know.

" After a performance conducted by Previn, Monteux said to him, " Did you think the orchestra was playing well?

Previn has to leap in the air at the appropriate time, so that Eric can see him.

Eric stands up, seizes Previn by the lapels and menacingly informs him " I'm playing all the right notes — but not necessarily in the right order.

Sylvia McNair has made over 70 recordings, including many complete operas and recitals ranging from Mozart arias with Sir Neville Marriner and the Academy of St Martin-in-the-Fields to CDs with Andre Previn of music by Jerome Kern and Harold Arlen ( Sure Thing and Come Rain or Come Shine ).

Because of Previn's objections, the position and Japan tour offer made to Salonen were withdrawn ; however, shortly thereafter in April 1989, Previn resigned, and four months later, Salonen was named Music Director Designate, officially taking the post in October 1992.

Chang has also been a soloist under the baton of conductors Mariss Jansons, Daniel Barenboim, Sir Colin Davis, Charles Dutoit, Bernard Haitink, James Levine, Lorin Maazel, Kurt Masur, Zubin Mehta, Riccardo Muti, André Previn, Sir Simon Rattle, Wolfgang Sawallisch, Leonard Slatkin, Michael Tilson Thomas, Placido Domingo, David Lockington, David Zinman, Gustavo Dudamel, Valery Gergiev, Esa-Pekka Salonen, Jaap van Zweden, John Williams and others.

The Master Chorale regularly performs with the Los Angeles Philharmonic and the Hollywood Bowl Orchestra, both at the Music Center and at the Hollywood Bowl, with such leading conductors as Esa-Pekka Salonen, Zubin Mehta, Andre Previn, Pierre Boulez, Michael Tilson Thomas and Roger Norrington, among many others.

So André Previn was " Andrew Preview ", Ian Carmichael was Hoagy Carmichael, Elton John was Elephant John, and Vanessa Redgrave was " Vanilla Redgrave ".

But Gordon also points out that there is a level of musical sophistication, as well as an intensity and " swing ", in the music recorded by Manne with Previn and Vinnegar ( and later Red Mitchell ) that is missing in the many lackluster albums of this type produced by others in that period.

Other conductors who have recorded the work include Arturo Toscanini, Daniel Barenboim, Sir Georg Solti, Leonard Bernstein, Giuseppe Sinopoli, Leopold Stokowski, Eugene Ormandy, William Steinberg and André Previn, as well as leading English conductors from Sir Henry Wood and Sir Adrian Boult to Sir Simon Rattle.

Guests included William Walton, Dudley Moore, André Previn, Julian Lloyd Webber, Nigel Kennedy and Georg Solti ( whose wife, Valerie Pitts was a panel member for the broadcast ).
