The second series was the first to establish the familiar Blackadder character: cunning, shrewd and witty, in sharp contrast to the bumbling Prince Edmund of the first series.
Another significant difference is that the character of Prince Edmund presented in the pilot is much closer to the intelligent, conniving Blackadder of the later series than the snivelling, weak buffoon of the original.

Prince Edmund is one of the many Blackadders to be killed on screen: he dies after accidentally drinking poisoned wine, although he had already been severely mutilated by the Duke of Burgundy.
Although his ' great-grandfather ' was Prince Edmund, he is much more intelligent, reserved, charming, handsome and witty than his ancestor.
The character shift from Prince Edmund in the first series to Lord Blackadder in the second is credited to the involvement of Ben Elton, who joined as the show's co-writer alongside Richard Curtis.
Edmund Beaufort, 1st Duke of Somerset, and James Butler, Earl of Wiltshire, were both suspected of fathering Prince Edward, however, there is no firm evidence to support the rumours, and Henry himself never doubted the boy's legitimacy and publicly acknowledged paternity.

In the series, E. Blackadder Esquire is the butler to the Prince Regent, the Prince of Wales ( the prince is played by Hugh Laurie as a complete fop and idiot ).

This Blackadder also appeared in an introductory sequence for Charles, Prince of Wales ' fiftieth birthday Gala Performance, in which he was supposedly organising a birthday show for Charles II ( also Fry ).
Among them were the Blackadder series, written by Ben Elton and Richard Curtis, starring Rowan Atkinson, with Laurie in various roles, but most notably Prince George and Lieutenant George.
Laurie appeared in the music videos for the 1986 single " Experiment IV " by Kate Bush, and the 1992 single " Walking on Broken Glass " by Annie Lennox, in full Georgian-period costume, a toned-down version of his Prince George character from Blackadder the Third, opposite John Malkovich, similarly reprising his role of the Vicomte Valmont from Dangerous Liaisons.
It is mentioned in the BBC TV Comedy Series Blackadder the Third in the episode where the Prince Regent believes that the Duke of Wellington is after him.
The Prince Regent swaps clothes with Blackadder ( who is his butler ) and says " This reminds of that story-The Prince and the Porpoise ".
Although the character Melchett did not appear in the third series of Blackadder, Stephen Fry appeared in the final episode as The Duke of Wellington, portrayed as a loud, bellowing and bellicose warmonger with a tendency towards casual violence aimed at the serving classes ( in particular the incompetent and buffoonish Prince Regent, who was then disguised as his own butler ).
