In 705, after Emperor Zhongzong's sudden death, Li Longji and Emperor Zhongzong's sister Princess Taiping overthrew Emperor Zhongzong's powerful wife Empress Wei and returned Li Dan to the throne.

However, Emperor Ruizong retained most of the imperial authority as Taishang Huang ( retired emperor ), and Princess Taiping, through him, continued to exert great influence on governance.

With Emperor Xuanzong and Princess Taiping locked into a power struggle, Zhang Shuo, from his post at Luoyang, had a messenger present Emperor Xuanzong with his sword -- meaning to tell him that it was time to take decisive action.

Meanwhile, it was said that Princess Taiping, Dou, Cen, Xiao, and Cui ; along with other officials Xue Ji, Li Jin ( 李晉 ) the Prince of Xinxing ( a grandson of Li Deliang ( 李德良 ), a cousin of Tang's founder Emperor Gaozu ), Li You ( 李猷 ), Jia Yingfu ( 賈膺福 ), Tang Jun ( 唐晙 ); the generals Chang Yuankai ( 常元楷 ), Li Ci ( 李慈 ), and Li Qin ( 李欽 ); and the monk Huifan ( 惠範 ), were plotting to overthrow Emperor Xuanzong.

Empress Wei retained power as empress dowager and regent, and she, while consolidating her power, were apprehensive about Emperor Zhongzong's brother Li Dan the Prince of Xiang, himself a former emperor, and his sister Princess Taiping.

Less than a month later, a coup led by Princess Taiping and Li Dan's son Li Longji the Prince of Linzi killed Empress Wei and Li Guo ' er.

The scheme failed, however, when Princess Taiping, the sister of Emperor Zhongzong, launched a coup two weeks later with her nephew Li Longji ( later Emperor Xuanzong ), son of the abdicated Emperor Ruizong, and overthrew Empress Wei and the young emperor.

Emperor Ruizong, the father of Li Longji and the older brother of Princess Taiping, was restored as emperor.

In 699, fearing that after her death the Li and Wu clans would not be able to keep peace with each other, Wu Zetian had Li Xiǎn, Li Dan, Princess Taiping, and her husband Wu Youji ( Wu Zetian's nephew ) swear an oath to each other.

At the time that Consort Yang Guipin was pregnant with Li Sisheng, Li Longji was locked in a power struggle with his aunt, Emperor Ruizong's sister Princess Taiping, and it was said that Princess Taiping had placed many associates in the crown prince's palace to spy on Li Longji and that she did not want him to have many sons.

) Li Longji was worried that, if Princess Taiping found out that Yang Guipin was pregnant, Princess Taiping's associates might harm him, and he spoke to a close associate, Zhang Shuo, stating: " A powerful individual did not want me to have many sons.

Less than a month later, Emperor Zhongzong's sister Princess Taiping and nephew Li Longji the Prince of Linzi rose in rebellion, killing Empress Dowager Wei and Li Guo ' er.

At that time, there was much struggle at court between the factions of Princess Taiping and Li Longji.

( However, when Yao and Song Jing then proposed sending Princess Taiping and two princes with arguably better claims on the crown prince title than Li Longji -- his older brother Li Chengqi the Prince of Song and cousin Li Shouli the Prince of Bin ( the son of Emperor Zhongzong's and Ruizong's older brother Li Xian ( note different character than Emperor Zhongzong )) -- out of the capital, Princess Taiping found out and got Yao and Song demoted out of the capital, although Zhang was not demoted at that time.

The victims of this purge included Emperor Yuan's sister Princess Jingwu ( 敬武長公主 ), Wang Mang's own uncle Wang Li, and his own cousin Wang Ren.

When Princess Piao wanted to end this dispute by giving her daughter Chen Jiao as wife to Prince Rong, Consort Li refused.

Princess Piao, seeing the precarious state that she would be in if Consort Li became empress dowager one day, carried out an alternative plan.

She sent a eunuch, Shi Li ( 史立 ), to serve as investigator, and Shi tortured a good number of Princess Dowager Feng's relations ( including her sister Feng Xi ( 馮習 ) and her sister-in-law Junzhi ( 君之 )), some to death, but still could not build a solid case against Princess Dowager Feng.

A mere two weeks later, Li Dan's sister Princess Taiping and Li Dan's son Li Longji the Prince of Linzi launched a coup which resulted in the death of Empress Wei.

Soon, however, tensions between Princess Taiping, who had many supporters, and Li Longji mounted.

Li Longji responded by conspiring with Princess Taiping, Princess Taiping's son Xue Chongjian ( 薛崇簡 ), as well as several low level officials close to him – Zhong Shaojing, Wang Chongye ( 王崇曄 ), Liu Youqiu, and Ma Sizong ( 麻嗣宗 ) – to act first.

Li Dan took over as regent, but at the urging of Princess Taiping, Li Longji, and Li Chengqi, Li Dan soon took the throne from Emperor Shang and again became emperor.

Meanwhile, though, with Emperor Ruizong considered meek, the court was dominated by two competing factions — of Princess Taiping and Li Longji.

Indeed, it was said that whenever chancellors brought proposals to Emperor Ruizong, Emperor Ruizong would ask them whether they had consulted Princess Taiping and Li Longji, and only act if the chancellors had consulted them.

Princess Taiping, finding Li Longji to be not receptive to her influences, began to spread news of offenses by Li Longji, hoping that he would eventually be removed.

In 711, the chancellors Yao Yuanzhi and Song Jing tried to defuse the situation by having Princess Taiping sent to Pu Prefecture ( 蒲州, roughly modern Yuncheng, Shanxi ) and the two princes with arguable better claims on the throne than Li Longji — Li Chengqi and Li Shouli the Prince of Bin ( whose father Li Xián ( note different tone than Emperor Zhongzong ) was an older brother to both Emperors Zhongzong and Ruizong ) – out of the capital to serve as prefectural prefects, but after their plan was discovered by Princess Taiping, she angrily complained, and was recalled to the capital along with Li Chengqi and Li Shouli.

Even when this elder brother first displayed symptoms of delicate health, the notion that he might die young was never taken seriously, and he was betrothed to the Princess Maria Feodorovna ( Dagmar of Denmark ).
