It was also the favourite fruit of Emperor Li Longji ( Xuanzong )' s favoured concubine Yang Yuhuan ( Yang Guifei ).

During the subsequent return to the throne by Emperor Zhongzong, Gao Lishi cultivated a friendship with Emperor Zhongzong's nephew Li Longji the Prince of Linzi, the son of Li Dan the Prince of Xiang ( Emperor Zhongzong's brother and former emperor ).

In 705, after Emperor Zhongzong's sudden death, Li Longji and Emperor Zhongzong's sister Princess Taiping overthrew Emperor Zhongzong's powerful wife Empress Wei and returned Li Dan to the throne.

Li Longji was created crown prince, and he retained Gao on his staff.

In 712, Emperor Ruizong passed the throne to Li Longji, who took the throne as Emperor Xuanzong.

Less than a month later, a coup led by Princess Taiping and Li Dan's son Li Longji the Prince of Linzi killed Empress Wei and Li Guo ' er.

Later, while Li Longji was crown prince under his father Emperor Ruizong ( r. 710-712 ), he summoned those in the empire known for their literary talent and personally examined them.

In 712, Emperor Ruizong passed the throne to Li Longji, who took the throne as Emperor Xuanzong.

To distinguish Emperor Xuānzong from his ancestor Emperor Xuánzong ( personal name Li Longji ), as their temple names are rendered identically in Wade-Giles and, when tonal marks are not used, Hanyu Pinyin, Xuānzong is occasionally referred to as Xuanzong II ( Wade-Giles: Hsuan-tsung II ) in western sources ; in Chinese, however, their temple names ( 宣宗 for him and 玄宗 for Li Longji ) are clearly distinct and this device is not used.

The scheme failed, however, when Princess Taiping, the sister of Emperor Zhongzong, launched a coup two weeks later with her nephew Li Longji ( later Emperor Xuanzong ), son of the abdicated Emperor Ruizong, and overthrew Empress Wei and the young emperor.

Emperor Ruizong, the father of Li Longji and the older brother of Princess Taiping, was restored as emperor.

Li Sisheng was born in 711, during the second reign of his grandfather Emperor Ruizong, as the third son of his father, then the Crown Prince, Li Longji, who would later become Emperor Xuanzong.

At the time that Consort Yang Guipin was pregnant with Li Sisheng, Li Longji was locked in a power struggle with his aunt, Emperor Ruizong's sister Princess Taiping, and it was said that Princess Taiping had placed many associates in the crown prince's palace to spy on Li Longji and that she did not want him to have many sons.

In the eighteenth century, the Li rebelled against the government, which responded by bringing in mercenaries from the Miao people regions of Guizhou Province.

Li Ru responded that the whole army should retreat to Chang ' an, bringing Luoyang's citizens and the imperial court with them.

At its peak, Li ' l Abner was read daily by 70 million Americans ( the U. S. population at the time was only 180 million ), with adult readers far outnumbering children.

Capp turned that world upside-down by routinely injecting politics and social commentary into Li ' l Abner.

Li ' l Abner: A Study in American Satire by Arthur Asa Berger ( Twayne, 1969 ) contained serious analyses of Capp's narrative technique, his use of dialogue, self-caricature and grotesquerie, the place of Li ' l Abner in American satire, and the significance of social criticism and the graphic image.

" One of the few strips ever taken seriously by students of American culture ," wrote Professor Berger, " Li ' l Abner is worth studying ... because of Capp's imagination and artistry, and because of the strip's very obvious social relevance.

Al Capp drew his own autobiography, the 34-page Al Capp by Li ' l Abner ( 1946 ), distributed to returning WWII amputee veterans.

In 1946 Capp created a special full-color comic book, Al Capp by Li ' l Abner, to be distributed by the Red Cross to encourage the thousands of amputee veterans returning from the war.

In 1940, an RKO movie adaptation starred Granville Owen ( later known as Jeff York ) as Li ' l Abner, with Buster Keaton taking the role of Lonesome Polecat, and featuring a title song with lyrics by Milton Berle.

Li ' l Abner was censored for the first, but not the last time in September 1947, and was pulled from papers by Scripps-Howard.

" ( In fact, Fisher's brutish hillbilly character — Big Leviticus, created by Capp in Fisher's absence — bore little resemblance to Li ' l Abner.

This work was collected by Dark Horse Comics in a four-volume hardcover series entitled Al Capp's Li ' l Abner: The Frazetta Years.

However, Frazetta returned briefly a few years later to draw a public service comic book called Li ' l Abner and the Creatures from Drop-Outer Space, distributed by the Job Corps in 1965.

Neither the strip's shifting political leanings nor the slide of its final few years had any bearing on its status as a classic, and in 1995 Li ' l Abner was recognized as such by the United States Postal Service.

Early descriptions of the production process and glazing techniques used for bricks can be found in the Song Dynasty carpenter's manual Yingzao Fashi, published in 1103 by the government official Li Jie, who was put in charge of overseeing public works for the central government's construction agency.

However, the Ming Dynasty would be overthrown by Li Zicheng's peasants rebellion, with Beijing captured in 1644 and the last Ming Emperor Chongzhen committing suicide.

This would be used to justify Li Si's large scale persecutions of the other schools of thought during the Qin dynasty, and the invariable denunciation by Confucian scholars from the Han dynasty and onwards.
