The Vogon Captain in charge of overseeing the destruction of the Earth, Prostetnic Vogon Jeltz is sadistic, even by Vogon standards.

He very rarely smiles: " Prostetnic Vogon Jeltz smiled very slowly.

" Prostetnic Vogon " may be a title, rather than part of his name, since during the second episode of the third radio series ( Fit the Fourteenth ), two other Prostetnic Vogons are heard from.

A red dwarf star about six light years from Earth, Barnard's Star is an interstellar transit stop used by the Vogon constructor fleet after demolishing Earth, where the crews ' planet leave is cancelled after Prostetnic Vogon Jeltz has an unhappy love affair.

Bill Wallis, who played Mr. Prosser and Prostetnic Vogon Jeltz in the original series, was unavailable, and Toby Longworth took the role of Jeltz in the new series.

Actors from the Tertiary to Quintessential Phases who appeared were Toby Longworth ( Prostetnic Vogon Jeltz ), Samantha Béart ( Random Dent ), Andy Secombe ( Colin the Security Robot ), Philip Pope ( Krikkit song ) and a recording of the voice of Douglas Adams as Agrajag.

He can also be heard in several instalments of The Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy Tertiary to Quintessential Phases, as Wowbagger and Prostetnic Vogon Jeltz.

Also, in The Restaurant at the End of the Universe, Gag Halfrunt refers to Jeltz as " Captain of Vogons Prostetnic " ( although this may have been a play on Halfrunt's accent ).

The only named Vogons in the stories are Jeltz ( see below ), Kwaltz ( who appears in the film ), Zarniwoop, revealed to be a Vogon in the Quintessential Phase, and Jeltz's son Constant Mown.

Griffiths has also performed in adaptations of the Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy, providing the voice for Slartibartfast for the radio adaptation of Life, the Universe and Everything and playing the Vogon Jeltz in the film version of The Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy.

Following another actor dropping out of the production, Bill Wallis was called in at short notice to play two parts ; Mr Prosser and Vogon Jeltz.

They then emigrated en masse to the Brantisvogon star cluster ( although the film has them staying on Vogsphere ), where they form most of the Galactic bureaucracy, most notably in the Vogon Constructor Fleets ( which, despite their name, patrol the galaxy demolishing planets ).

Arthur Dent, Ford Prefect, Trillian, and Zaphod Beeblebrox have just left the planet Magrathea when they are attacked by a Vogon ship.

A distorted version of Southend is one of the visions that confront Arthur Dent and Ford Prefect when the Improbability Drive of the Heart of Gold transports them to the ship from outer space having been thrown out from the Vogon ship.

In the first series, Earthman Arthur Dent is going to have his house demolished to make way for a new road, but before work can start his friend Ford Prefect informs him that the world is going to be demolished by a Vogon constructor fleet " to make way for a hyperspace bypass " and that he is in fact an alien writer for " The Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy ".

It ends at a slightly earlier point than the radio episode, after Ford's line " he might want to read us some of his poetry first ", and on a cliffhanger that Arthur and Ford are about to be discovered in a Vogon storeroom, but before the Vogon poetry is actually read.

The episode ends with Ford going to floor 23, and being forced to jump out of a window, in order to escape from Zarniwoop Vann Harl, who is revealed to be a disguised Vogon.

* The pier is mentioned in The Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy ; after Ford and Arthur are thrown off a Vogon construction ship and are picked up by the starship Heart of Gold, Arthur remarks that it looks as though they're standing " on the seafront at Southend "; however, in the 1981 BBC TV adaptation neither the set used for the pier nor the view of the buildings on the shore look anything like Southend.

After being read Vogon poetry, they are thrown out of an airlock and improbably rescued by the Starship Heart of Gold, which has been stolen by Ford's semi-cousin Zaphod Beeblebrox, accompanied by Trillian, a young woman who Arthur once met at a party.

Fenchurch tells Arthur about her revelation at the time of the Vogon fleet's visit.

Russell explains that she had become delusional after worldwide mass hysteria over the " hallucinations with the big yellow spaceships " ( Vogon Ships ).

A recreation of the costume from the BBC Television version of the story ( all but the head of the original was lost decades ago ) has a cameo role in the feature film, appearing in the Vogon office queue with various other life forms.

Another favourite Vogon pastime is to import millions of beautiful jewel-backed scuttling crabs from their native planet, cut down giant trees of breathtaking beauty, and spend a happy drunken night smashing the crabs to bits with iron mallets and cooking the crab meat by burning the trees.

In the film version, the craft are grey and cubic, a continuation of the emphasis on bureaucracy in the Vogons ' conception: " Douglas's description of the Vogon ships hanging in the air in much the same way that bricks don't to these Vogon ships which are these massive concrete tower blocks, with hardly any windows, they just have a few doors around the base ," says Joel Collins.

This is, however, against Vogon regulations, and when the pair are discovered, they are tortured with hearing Vogon poetry, the third worst in the known Universe, and then thrown into space.

More contemporary examples of nonsense verse are Vogon poetry, found in Douglas Adams's The Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy or the 1972 song ' Prisencolinensinainciusol ' by Italian multi-talent Adriano Celentano.

A second example of Vogon poetry is found in the Hitchhiker's Guide interactive fiction game that was produced by Infocom.

In season 2, episode 7 of the NBC series Chuck titled " Chuck Versus The Fat Lady ", Chuck's college girlfriend Jill refers to another character's paranoia and strange literary references when she notes, " The logon for his computer was a randomly selected word from a piece of Vogon poetry.

Trefil found new fame in 2005 when it was used as a location for the alien Vogon homeworld in the film of Douglas Adams's book The Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy.

In the spring of 2005, Ibas announced that it was acquiring privately owned British competitor Vogon International Ltd ( founded in 1985 ), which was planned to continue as a separate company until January 2006 when it would be integrated into Ibas.
