* 1541 – French explorer Jacques Cartier lands near Quebec City in his third voyage to Canada.

Quebec was settled as a French colony, and originally operated under the French civil law system, using the coûtume de Paris.

However, in 1774, the British Parliament passed the Quebec Act, which restored the French civil law for matters of private law ( e. g., contracts, property, successions ), while keeping the English common law as the basis for public law in the colony, notably the criminal law.

82 % of Canadians outside Quebec speak English natively, but within Quebec the figure drops to just 7. 7 % as most residents are native speakers of Quebec French.

This is particularly the case in eastern Canada apart from Quebec which is French speaking.

English maps rarely show the French names outside of Quebec, which itself is spelled Québec in French.
