In Britain, the Christmas tree was introduced in the time of the personal union with Hanover, by George III's Queen Charlotte of Mecklenburg-Strelitz in early 19th century, but the custom hadn't yet spread much beyond the royal family.

By 1763, he was receiving orders from the highest levels of the British nobility, including Queen Charlotte.

In 1759 ( or 1758 according to Chambers ), he went to England and became chamber-musician to Queen Charlotte.

Trials in the Queen Charlotte Islands ( Haida Gwaii ) of British Columbia using sea water sprayed on the foliage have demonstrated promising results, which may prove to be a viable option for eradication where concerns over herbicide application are too great.

It is separated from the mainland of British Columbia by Johnstone Strait, and Queen Charlotte Strait on the northeast, and by the Strait of Georgia on the southeast, which along with the Strait of Juan de Fuca along its southwest separate it from the United States ( the Straits of Georgia and Juan de Fuca are now officially also part of the Salish Sea, which includes Puget Sound as well ).

West of the island is the open Pacific Ocean, while to its north is Queen Charlotte Sound.

From 1792 to 1794, George Vancouver charted the Pacific Northwest on behalf of Great Britain, including the Strait of Georgia, the bays and inlets of Puget Sound, and the Johnstone Strait – Queen Charlotte Strait and much of the rest of the British Columbia Coast and southeast Alaska shorelines.

In 1786 Jean-François de La Pérouse, representing France, sailed to the Queen Charlotte Islands after visiting Nootka Sound but any possible French claims to this region were lost when La Pérouse and his men and journals were lost in a shipwreck near Australia.

The small Marlborough Sounds settlement of Portage lies on the Kenepuru Sound which links Queen Charlotte Sound at Torea Bay.

Before reaching Wellington ( on New Zealand's North Island ), brief stops were made at Port Hardy ( on d ' Urville Island ) and Queen Charlotte Sound ( on New Zealand's South Island ) and Challenger passed through the Cook Strait to reach Wellington.

The main large port is Picton on the mainland, at the head of Queen Charlotte Sound.

The main sounds, other than Queen Charlotte Sound, are Pelorus Sound and Kenepuru Sound.

Tory Channel is a major arm of Queen Charlotte Sound, and between them they isolate the hills of Arapawa Island from the mainland.

The most notable shipwreck in the sounds is that of the Russian cruise liner Mikhail Lermontov, which sank in 1986 in Port Gore, close to the mouth of Queen Charlotte Sound, after striking rocks.

It is found in the Pacific Northwest of North America, northwards from the Puget Sound along the British Columbia coast ( including the Queen Charlotte Islands ), along the Gulf of Alaska and the Aleutian Islands to the far eastern Bering Sea coast of Russia, and may also occur on the Kuril Islands and the coasts of Kamchatka.
