Abraham Quintanilla Jr., Selena's father and manager, did not approve of their relationship at first and eventually fired Pérez from the band.

When one of the guitar players for the band would leave, Abraham Quintanilla Jr. would let out an open call for anyone in the state of Texas who was willing to participate with them and tour along side with the band.

Quintanilla & Kumbia All Starz sang songs like " Mami ", " Reggae Kumbia ", " Dijiste ", " Por Ti Baby " with Flex, they did a special tribute to Michael Jackson and Selena Quintanilla and " Parece Que Va A Llover ".

Among the celebrities who were reported to have phoned the Quintanilla family to express their condolences were Gloria Estefan, Celia Cruz, Julio Iglesias, and Madonna.

In 2006 however Quintanilla had conflicts with fellow band member Cruz Martínez and left the Kumbia Kings.

Quintanilla and Cruz Martínez have solved their differences, and announced that the Kumbia Kings will reunite for a series of concerts lasting from late 2009 through early 2010.

On July 13 of that year, Kennedy, along with pitcher Jay Witasick, was traded by the Rockies to the Oakland Athletics for outfielder Eric Byrnes and minor league infield prospect Omar Quintanilla.

On July 13, 2005, Byrnes, along with prospect Omar Quintanilla, was traded to the Colorado Rockies for pitchers Joe Kennedy and Jay Witasick.
